Fleas! Argh!

I swear this year has been the worst we've ever had!

Ddog has a passenger. Well actually he doesn't, the little sod jumped onto me when I was checking his paws for grass seeds. It is now deceased, but I feel so itchy!

I only treated him with spot on theee weeks ago (when we last found a new friend), so I can't do him again for a week. Have therefore made a multi-stage plan:

Throws off the furniture are in the machine on a cycle with a pre-wash, they will be indorexed when dry. Thorough hoovering is about to happen, and the dog bedding is due for the wash as well.

Indorex is on order and I will get an emergency tin from the vet today to start on the house (I only did this recently as well!).

Dog is having a haircut and a bath today - I'm going to see what the local pet shop has in the flea shampoo department. Hoping that will tide us over for a week until I can nuke them again. I've never needed the stuff before, can anyone recommend one please?

Am looking at flea bombs online - again, can anyone recommend one? I've never used one of those before either.

If all that fails, we're calling in the professionals... dh will moan and groan but I can't have fleas in the house!

There can't be too many as ddog is not constantly scratching, and we're not getting bitten. Although I feel really itchy, but I think it's psychosomatic... yuck, yuck, YUCK. Sad

What spot on do you use?

I'm a bit of a slattern with most things but fleas fuck me off

Luckily, touch wood, we haven't had them with our dog.

I put on a spot on every month. A vet prescription one only. Cost me £48 for 4 pipettes but worth it as it treats ticks, fleas, mites, lice and other bitey bugs.

It's called advantix

Spudlet · 31/07/2017 08:26

Our vet gives out Prinovox. I try and do it every month, but I must admit I sometimes forget... we've never had recurrent problems like this though. I'm not very happy about it (and I keep getting random itches 😱)

Try marking on the calendar/on your phone to remind you when to flea Ddog. Always works with DCat!

Floralnomad · 31/07/2017 09:33

Would a seresto collar be better for the dog , they last a lot longer so you don't have to be as on the ball with remembering . Or try one of the tablet treatments like Bravecto , only needs doing every 3 months .

Spudlet · 31/07/2017 11:25

I don't think a collar would be a good idea, he likes the water and we have a toddler too. I could look at the tablets though.

I never used to forget but since having DS I have so much to remember that poor old ddog tends to get pushed back a bit Blush

I think the seresto collar is ok for swimming , not sure about toddlers but the vet would know.

Spudlet · 31/07/2017 12:30

Thanks, I'll look into it Smile

Indorex spray from the vets for the house and bravecto for the pooch. Smile

Wolfiefan · 31/07/2017 12:35

I wouldn't use bravecto. Too many scare stories. Never heard of the spot on you use. Wonder if it's the same stuff as frontline. It's clearly not working. We use nexgard.

LaChatte · 31/07/2017 12:38

Vet told me I could put spot on stuff on every two weeks in summer, just a lower dose (for a smaller breed or half a tube), seems to work and hasn't killed DDog or DCats yet (oldest DCat is 15).

LaChatte · 31/07/2017 12:39

We use Advantix too.

Spudlet · 31/07/2017 12:42

I don't know really, I didn't find any more when I was clipping and bathing him - and I was really looking. It may have been one he picked up in the grass earlier. Then again, perhaps not. We'll see how it goes and perhaps swap to something else if we need to - we get this stuff free as part of the vets monthly payment scheme, so I'd rather not change unless we definitely have to, for financial reasons. DH is convinced it came from a golden retriever we met or walking, but I think he has taken against this dog because it ran up to our Spud (who was on a lead) then growled at him. Or possibly he harassed a hedgehog or something when we weren't looking.

I have re-Indorexed his favourite armchair (I know, I know, but he's an old bugger now and he likes his home comforts 😳) and I'll do the rest of the room after DS is in bed tonight. We're currently sitting in the garden waiting for him to dry out after his bath. He hates me Grin

I double checked with the vet but they said I can't spot-treat him again until it's due, which is not for a fortnight.

Thousands of people give their dogs Bravecto with absolutely no issues at all , there are horror stories about all drugs if you google enough .

Wolfiefan · 31/07/2017 13:28

There are too many about that product for me to feel happy using it on my dog when there are safer options for her.

Floralnomad · 31/07/2017 13:35

Have you actually googled 'issues with nexgard and dogs' wolfie , because there are just as many issues and people complaining about that . It's all personal preference and what suits one dog won't suit another , but none of them are without issues.

Wolfiefan · 31/07/2017 13:45

Yes thanks. Some dogs have allergies and it isn't recommended for animals that suffer seizures.

JaneEyre70 · 07/08/2017 14:58

I'm currently battling them on my cocker spaniel. He regularly rolls on anything smelly he can find, think he found a dead rabbit and it was clearly full of fleas....... the vet did say that it's been great breeding weather for fleas this year. I can't use the spot on stuff on mine, we had a lab that was really ill from it so I have ordered a Scalibor collar (around £25) and the odd wash in flea shampoo (Beaphur).

agedknees · 09/08/2017 13:48

We use bravecto on our rescue dog and have had no problems. No fleas either.
