Is this a good quality dog food?

Our lab is so fussy and barely eats his own food. He will happily eat any human food going and loves bones. We've tried fairly expensive stuff like Skinners and cheaper stuff like Wainwright's and he doesn't like anything!

I found a dog food at jolleys called lifestage that is quite expensive but seems to have good ingredients. Do you agree?

Turkey 50% (including 28% Freshly Prepared Turkey, 20% Dried Turkey & 2% Turkey Stock), Sweet Potato (26%), Peas, Potato (6%), Beet Pulp, Linseed, Omega 3 Supplement, Vitamins & Minerals, Vegetable Stock, Cranberry (equivalent to 7.5g per Kg of product), FOS (92 mg/kg), MOS (23 mg/kg).
Vitamins: VE672/Vitamin A 15,000 IU, E671/Vitamin D3 2,250 IU;
Trace Elements; E1/Iron 160 mg, 3b201/Iodine 1.58 mg, E4/Copper 60 mg, E5/Manganese 110 mg, E6/Zinc 130 mg, E8/Selenium 0.60 mg.

Tia.

I've had my share of fussy dogs , always resort to raw dog food , I buy frozen natures menu but I have a small dog so its not extortionate.

But this site has info on loads of dog food

try this site

dArtagnansCrumpet · 28/07/2017 13:18

Thanks but unfortunately I don't have the capacity to feed raw I don't think.

It only gets 3.5-3.7 /5 on the all about dog food website , so no not particularly good.

orzal · 28/07/2017 14:42

We give our Labrador Royal Canin Labrador. We used Skinners before that. It's expensive but is sometimes on offer with 15% or 2 kg free. It really seems to suit her.

That there is your problem. Why eat dog food, when you can have human food. It's like expecting a toddler to choose lettuce and cabbage, when there's the offer of chocolates and sweets. To stop a dog being fussy don't give human food, put his bowl down if he hasn't eaten it in 10mins take it away. He'll soon learn to eat what he's given since nothing tastier is on offer - meaning you can feed the best food for your dog and budget.

BLUEsNewSpringWatch · 28/07/2017 14:59

Also different foods suit different dogs - for example a poster above has good results on royal canin but my dog wasn't so glossy and had a really strong "doggy smell" when he was on it. He's been much better on pooch & mutt.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 28/07/2017 16:23

Floral, it's actually a different food as the ingredients are different? It contains grains whereas this one does not and is also listed cheaper than it is.

I'm just looking for a good quality food for him at a reasonable price. He often sniffs it and walks off. He only gets fed tidbits of our food on occasion. His coat and smell are awful tbh they are dog hairs everywhere.

I agree about different dogs suiting different food. One of mine is on Royal Canin which is not a particularly good brand in my opinion but I have tried every other type going including the highest rated on the aforementioned website and he does very badly on them (I won't go in to details).

My other dog is on Cannegans.

I do give them meat too and veg, I can't imagine the boredom of only having dry food.

Floralnomad · 28/07/2017 16:30

Have you tried Millie's Wolfheart , you can buy quite small sample bags of the different varieties .

TheFaerieQueene · 28/07/2017 16:30

We switched from royal canin to orijen for our lab. I'm very happy with it and she loves it. It is just meat and veg - no cereal.

Stoprightnowplease · 28/07/2017 16:32

I got a massive box of trial wet and dry food from Lily's kitchen, £5 postage but individually it would have cost about £30, you could give the trials a go from various brands.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 28/07/2017 18:01

Stop, did you have to email for the trial pack? I can't find anything on their website.

It was linked to on one of my dog FB groups. I will see if I can find it

Stoprightnowplease · 28/07/2017 18:06

Sorry, I just checked FB and I think it's finished. Lots do them though, keep an eye out.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 28/07/2017 18:11

I feed my woofter Aatu, it rates top or 5/5 on allaboutdogfood and doesn't really work out particularly expensive.

It's 70% chicken (or turkey, duck or fish - whichever you choose) with the rest being made up of fruit, veg and herbs.

She absolutely loves it and was a bit of a fussy moo to start with, but she loves this (even with her human treats!) and her poo is so much nicer to pick up GrinBlush

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 28/07/2017 18:12

Should add that I buy mine from Amazon, only £49 for a 10kg bag then, or £47 on subscribe and save

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 28/07/2017 18:43

My bad, it's 80% chicken lol

mummyeme · 28/07/2017 20:14

My dogs been on Lily's kitchen but has started turning her nose up at it and getting really fussy. I've tried raw and she's cleaned the bowl and gone back looking for more for the past two days! Complete change and hopefully she stays this way.

SkeletonSkins · 28/07/2017 20:17

Tbh OP id say that's a pretty decent dog food. It's certainly not awful. Anything higher than 3 on that website is alright by my book. If the dog eats and and looks good on it then that's my measure.

roundtable · 28/07/2017 20:35

I use Harrison Drake which is 80% meat, no grain or meal.

Her poos have improved and her coat is glossy so I'm happy at the moment.

I wouldn't feed anything with Potato or Beet Pulp as theyre both fillers with little nutritional value. Ive got mine on Millies Wolfheart.

Theyre both picky eaters (anything out of the bin but not the nice lovely meaty stuff I spent hundreds on) I swapped to Millies countryside mix and started feeding as though they were training treats then offered more over the space of a week ending with a bowl. They think theyre getting treats all the time but theyre not. (who said spaniels were clever?)

You can order trial sizes from their website. I haven't tried theyre wet food. Its good value for money because you don't need to feed a lot of it.

I buy chickens from our local co op when they are reduced to half price....cook one and it lasts 3 days mixed with cosine dog biscuits from lidls and both my golden retrievers love it....or I give them a tin of sardines in oil mixed with the same biscuits....very happy dogs
