My ten week old chihuahua puppy just fell in the pond

That really she now looks like a gremlin! I think ddog (her/chi cross) may have fished her out as he's got a wet nose and paws. To add insult to injury she's had to have a bath and have her ears cleaned. He's three and avoids water like the plague. I'm feeling very thankful that we built lots of levels in when he was a pup and will be keeping an even closer eye on her now.

Make sure you keep her nice and warm, such tiny dogs can struggle to maintain their body temperature especially at such a young age. Bear in mind that due to their extremely small size chihuahuas actually develop slower than other breeds which is why they don't normally go to their new homes as puppies until at least twelve weeks old.

DDog2 (17kg and double coated) fell in the local canal as an adult on a not particularly cold day and even she got surprisingly cold afterwards.

Getting a mesh cover for your pond may be necessary to prevent tragedy if you have a chi!

InfiniteSheldon · 25/07/2017 18:56

She had a warm bath and I dried her off and wrapped her in a warm towel she's absolutely fine currently asleep under my knitting. DH us going to fence off the pond tomorrow morning. She's very adventurous and independent far more so than my older dog. I've never heard that chi's should stay with their mum til 12 weeks and can't find any evidence for that so am just going to ignore it.

Actually it's often stated that the smallest of breeds, who develop slower, like Chihuahua and Papillon, should not leave mum until 12weeks. I know the Papillon and Shih Tzu breeders on KC Assured Breeders scheme all go with a 12week rule and believe it is fully necessary.

Quick Google brought up chihuahua breed club code of ethics
www.the-british-chihuahua-club.org.uk/AboutUs/CodeEthics.php
You'll see point 19 quite clearly states:
"shall not sell, or allow to leave their premises, puppies which are less than 12 weeks of age"

But of course that's only the breed club, who are all about the health and welfare of the breed and it's future, so obviously you should just ignore itHmm

Well you're a bundle of joy and happiness aren't you

I find it upsetting and annoying that not only do people not give a fuck where they get their dog from but when they post about their puppy potentially coming to harm due to their lack of basic planning they then say they'll ignore someone who has politely pointed out the extra precautions you should be taking, due to the puppy's breed and extremely young age, to prevent puppy getting seriously ill from it. Seriously what was the point of the thread if you were going to ignore the factual information because you didn't already know it, as you couldn't be arsed to spend 5mins researching the basics of the breed before buying one from a puppy farm someone who didn't give a shit about the puppy. It's ridiculous.

WanderingTrolley1 · 25/07/2017 21:51

Why ask for advice, then?!

InfiniteSheldon · 26/07/2017 03:35

I did not buy from a puppy farm how patronising and unpleasant! I bought from a reputable local breeder recommended by my vet.
I posted after a scare=with my pup in the dog section NOT AIBU.

A reputable breeder who does not follow basic breeding ethics guidelines 😂

StarryCorpulentCunt · 26/07/2017 22:47

Sorry OP hate to be a bearer of bad news but no ethical breeder would rehome that young. Most small breeds are with their mother until 12 to 14 weeks.

No one has said yabu. Just to keep a close eye as she is very young and would normally still be with her litter mates.
