We brought our long awaited puppy home on Monday and we are all completely besotted 😍 Wondered whether anybody could advise/reassure me? We took her to vets Monday afternoon for jabs due & nexgard flea/worm treatment... she has since been passing loose & mucussy (& v smelly) stools. I feel terribly worried that I've somehow broken her. Is it likely to be a side effect from everything she's been through in the last few days? Have spoken to vet who thinks prob fine, but I can't help but feel a bit panicky!!!

Lordy, she is CUTE! Our breeder warned us that it's very common for puppies to be a bit loose for the first few days in a new home: new microbes/stress etc, so if the vet isn't worries, I wouldn't be. Our pup had a few very unpleasant poos for a while, but settled down after a day or so. Have you got any pro-kolin to hand (or could you get some from vet/pets at home?)

Ah, she's a sweetie - yes loose is very common for a few settling in days as a reaction to stress and change. Have you kept her on the same food her breeder used? Changing food can have same symptoms. Enjoy those crazy puppy days! 🐶

Thanks, yes same food as thankfully she started on a decent one! Who knew I could be THIS worried & obsessed with poo again now my children are bigger!! She's had loads to cope with & those wormer things can't be very pleasant for little tummies. It was the mucus part that worried me. Will research the pro-kolin...

We had the same problem with our dog for the first few months despite following all the rules. She was checked out by the vet who said as long as she was well ( bouncing off the walls) then not to stress too much. She was and is tasting or eating everything she comes across and we came to the conclusion it was something in the garden. Probably next doors cherry laurel.
Make sure no one is giving her milk as it can cause colitis, pups can have cows milk intolerance.
If she starts to loose her bounce and stops eating then straight to vets.

Mucus in itself is not necessarily something to worry about. Depending on the quantity and how long it continues, it can indicate quite a number of things. Could be it's just happening because your puppy's tummy is a bit sensitive at the moment; she's going through big changes in her life.

Some mucus is normal, and if your vet isn't worried I'd wait and see.But as pp said change in behaviour is what you need to watch for and if you're at all concerned get her straight to the vet as things can escalate very quickly with small puppies.

She looks gorgeous, there's nothing better than a small wriggly puppy. :)

She's gorgeous. What breed is she?

Wolfiefan · 20/07/2017 19:54

Very normal.

It took us about a month before poos were better and then a change of food to get them really like sausages (sorry!)

totallyliterally · 20/07/2017 20:32

I should add first few days we had blood and then the odd time. Especially if over excited too. But I just judged it on she was totally normal eating / drinking / behaviour so I kept an eye on it and she was fine.

We went through so many poo bags that first month. Now at 17 weeks down to a few poos a day.
