Dog suddenly pooing overnight

She's 11, no obvious signs of health issues any other time, but it's getting to be a problem! Just now we heard her whining to go out (she never does this) and she went straight out for a wee, but she'd already pooed. What will the vet investigate? Is it likely to be a problem forever now? 🙈

Does your dog have access to food overnight that she's eating and she's needing a poo?

What time does she get out last thing at night?

Mine improved when we changed her diet to make her poo more solid. Easier to hold on....we used raw food. It's the bone that does it. She has a chicken drumstick at lunchtime.

Any sudden behaviour change needs a vet check.

Thegirlisnotright · 18/07/2017 08:12

Her routine has hasn't changed, and the poo is solid. No food overnight, only water. I will take her to the vet as it's been happening occasionally for a couple of months but the last 3 nights have been something else. I just wanted to know anyone else's experiences really. Worried she's got a serious problem 😢

This happened with my old dog around the same time. No food at night, regular routine, plenty of walking, clean bill of health otherwise, etc. The vet put it down to age and since it only happened sporadically (once a week or so) we just spared her feelings, cleaned it up, and pretended it wasn't happening.

Thegirlisnotright · 19/07/2017 20:43

I suspect that might be the case for us too Shantasia.
Vet has given us some pills to increase blood to the brain or something (suspsecting doggy dementia). No other signs of anything wrong but given wormers and antibiotic jab just in case.

Hi, I have the same problem with my 11yr old gsd but he's weeing. His health etc is fine. Vet thinks it's onset dementia. Does your dog pace, lick it's paws constantly, lays down for few minutes then decides to lay elsewhere? Also acts like a puppy at times? They are also signs of dementia

Veterinari · 22/07/2017 09:40

It's often a sign of canine dementia.
Medication such as Selgian can be incredibly helpful at treating the issue, along with a consistent routine.
