Practicalities of getting a second dog

This is the beginning of me thinking about getting a second dog at some point.

I already have a 14month old Male Cavalier (no intention of neutering). I'm thinking about some practicalities, such as;

  1. what kind of age gap is best / how will I know when my boy is a good age/stage of training to introduce a new puppy (or maybe older rescue).

  2. as I have an entire male, obviously I wouldn't be getting a female puppy. So
    A) if I did get a neutered rescue bitch, would there be any likely issues with male being entire or not because bitch obviously won't come into heat.
    B) are there likely issues if I bring in another male (whether neutered or entire or puppy or rescue)?

  3. Will a lap dog and something larger be happy together or am I likely to have issues with them. Just wondering because I only see people with little lap dogs or larger dogs - never both and I'd quite like a whippet, lurcher, greyhound or something like a golden retriever next. partially because my lap gets crowded enough with 2 DC and BluePup all snuggled on me

  4. Anything else I should be thinking about?

Are you sure your ddog wants a companion? Our 3 ddogs are fab together but my childhood ddog had no interest in other dogs and hated our new addition until her dying day.

I think he'd be happy with a doggy friend - he loves everyone/everydog. Also BluePup is very good with my brothers dog (also a small lap dog), who is really aggressive to all dogs but him - they'll even curl up and go to sleep on the sofa together - both at my house and at my brothers house.

Just sharing my own experience ...

I got my 2nd dog when the 1st was about the same as yours (she's 9 months younger than him). I think this worked as they both had similar energy levels to play and run.

My boy (1st dog) was neutered but my girl wasn't. She went through 1 season before we had her spayed (it was a condition of her rescue that we did that although I would have done anyway). However, I don't know for sure that bitches don't still give off some kind of scent even after spaying. Like I say both have been neutered but at odd times my boy will get very interested in her and attempt to hump (he's not very good at it and quite often gets the wrong end much to her annoyance!).

Size-wise I don't think it makes any difference, all dogs think they are the same size anyway!

If your dog is really friendly and confident I would say go for it, I've just got a third and it's lovely to see their little pack together. All with different personalities but all happy to curl up together for a nap!
