Broken dog claw

My cockapoo came in from the garden last night and we noticed he was licking his paw quite a lot. I managed to get hold of it and felt that the claw was broken, it hasn't come off completely and is still held on. The crack is quite far back so I don't want to pull it.

He's not limping or anything and you wouldn't know it's there apart from the licking (there's no bleeding). Is he trying to sort it out himself/will it fall off in a couple of days or is this a trip to the vets?

My pup fractured his claw a short while ago. We ended up at the vets as he was limping lots so thought he had injured his leg at first. The vets cut it back as much as possible and advised rest for a few days. However, he limped on and off for a week or so until it grew out.

If you can, cut as much off as possible so it doesn't get caught on stuff and pull further. If it bleeds a lot you can dab it in cornflour to stop it. Keep an eye on it and try to keep it clean. (Dog paws and clean don't exactly go together, I know...) And it should grow back no problem, probably no need for vet visit unless it gets infected. Not that I'm an expert but this has happened to a couple of my dogs and it was the advice I was given by the emergency vet when I phoned out of hours to save the call out fee!

Thanks for your replies! I'm going to take him in this afternoon, I've been able to have a closer look and it looks like the crack is high up and he's started to run away if I try to look at his paw. He's also acting a bit out of character and is hiding under the table so I'd rather be safe than sorry :)

Claws IME generally require a vet visit , they can be very painful .

Aw bless him, I would probably do the same if he wasn't letting me near it, easier to have a professional inspecting so you can just comfort!
Mine managed to do it midnight Christmas eve, at least yours has picked a sensible time of year Wink
Hope he's OK anyway, sure he will be! x

Hippy there's always something that goes wrong round christmas! So yes he's definitely picked a good time...I think all the smells of the new garden encouraged him to have a dig and he must have hit a root or something!

Oh well, we will get it sorted early and it also gives me the opportunity to take my newborn out in her sling for the first time so have to look at the positives!
