Present for my Mum's new dog

My mum lost her dog last summer and she and her DP were devastated. He was a gorgeous dog. However happily a year on they have decided to rescue again and are actively looking for a new pal. There is already a dog they are going back to see for a second visit. It's Mum's birthday soon and I was thinking about getting her some bits for the new dog - if it was me I might like a new bowl etc rather than reusing all of the old dog's things. If it were you, what things would you want new? I'm not (yet) a dog owner. Or should I stick to book on dog friendly bnbs (less emotive but quite full?) thank you dog house folk!

She may be quite attached to some of old dog's things. Maybe don't replace them. Focus on things for new dog. So new chew toy and some treats etc.

That's what I meant (prob worded it badly.) so you recommend chew toys in shapes I've not spotted at their house in the past, for example?

A new nylabone?
Blanket with new dog's name on?
Something to fit new dog that wouldn't have fitted old dog?

MotherPie · 10/07/2017 18:29

Toys, treats, maybe a nice lead and collar?

So I take it then that no one would mind having a few things bought? I didn't want to do the wrong thing (but I'm v excited about the dog!)

which item is most personal (so I make sure that is left for mum to choose, it feels a bit like MIL buying a first baby grow ShockGrin)

I think it's lovely to want to welcome a new family member. My mum bought a gift for our pup and I bought one when she got her new dog.

Some expensive indestructible type toys would be a god send depending on the breed. I used to buy my dog new toys every few days, the cheap ones are a false economy!

It would be quite sweet to have a name tag engraved for the new pooch.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/07/2017 20:18

I think a lead is very personal. I like to choose my own because it's something I handle every day. I don't reuse them though, if you see what I mean, once a dog dies, the lead gets put away. Same with the collar.

Dog toys are a good present.

ShmooBooMoo · 10/07/2017 20:21

Lovely idea. How about one of these (not sure of your budget)?

Maybe a couple of little toys or dog treats?

pigsDOfly · 11/07/2017 17:40

Agree with Chardonnay about the collar and lead and same with the tag. I wouldn't want anyone else to buy my dog's tag.

Toys though would be very welcome. Maybe a lovely ball, some dogs love a kick around with a soft football.

I think it's a lovely idea to buy a present, I'd really appreciate it if it were mine new dog.

A Kong chew toy would be very welcome I'm sure - useful also for settling the new dog in.

Viewofhedges · 12/07/2017 20:12

Thanks all. I'll go for toys then, by almost unanimous vote! I'm looking forward to it not jealous at all! Thanks for confirming I won't be overstepping the mark.

Get some Kong branded toys or those yellow and blue tough ones from pets at home, they really do last so much longer as dogs love trying to destroy flimsy toys. How nice of you to get her a present Smile

That's a lovely thoughtful thing to do. One of my DHs friends bought our new puppy a toy and it was much appreciated.
