Just to give a bit of background. Dh grew up with dogs, my family have never been dog people. Dh has been keen on having a dog for years, we now feel the dc are old enough for this to be manageable.

Dh is a runner so wants a dog that can run with him, doesn't like what he considers to be "handbag dogs". He also wants a dog that has a good temperament and is trainable. Ds1 (17) is asthmatic so we have to take this into account too. I work from home so would do daytime short walk, dh can do longer runs/walks before and after work.

Dh has come to the conclusion that the ONLY option is a Vizsla. I am a bit concerned that it is potentially quite a large dog and my only request is that I don't want a really large dog- house isn't huge although we have a big garden.

Is anyone able to suggest any other breeds that tick similar boxes to the Vizsla? Any tips would be most welcome. Dh can be quite single minded and I don't have enough knowledge to counter his claims!

You want a lurcher Grin - I run with mine and they love it. But, otoh, the rest of the day while I'm working (I wfh) they are snoring and not mithering to do things.
They are biggish dogs, but don't seem like it in the house as they are normally immobile!

There are always lots of lurchers looking for homes through no fault of their own, and lots of puppies too. I foster puppies for EGLR, and my current one is going to a home where they wanted a dog that the dad could run with

Standard poodle? Less chance of setting off allergies, and can run for miles.

tabulahrasa · 08/07/2017 00:32

Any healthy dog would be able to run with him, provided he waits till it's finished growing and builds it up gradually.

For a pet and just a bit of running - actually a vizsla is probably too high energy if you're wanting a dog that'll be happy doing not much through the day with you.

Unless you're after a dog that will follow you round all day trying to join in everything you do?

Another Lurcher vote. . .

How far does he run? If we're talking regular half-marathon distances you might do well to get an adult rescue pointer from one of the various reputable groups that rehome them from places like Cyprus. That way you could miss the puppy and teenage chaos (unless you actually want a puppy) and also opt for one at the smaller end of the size spectrum, or a cross.

see here, for example.

Rhodesian Ridgeback big dogs but placid. Total couch potatoes in the house but can run for miles and miles. Hardly any fur so hardly any shedding.

Wolfiefan · 09/07/2017 19:44

No dog is guaranteed to avoid triggering allergies.
Depends on distances. If DH is a jog around the block type an adult vizsla would need more.
And puppies can't go running with you. Ideally not till over a year.

Lurchers come in different sizes, not all are large. A Bedlington x Whippet or Bedlington xWhippetx Collie would be a good size for you.

Or just a whippet.

Standard Poodle! I have one and she can run for miles and miles. Very clever, easy to train, really loyal too. She loves cuddles and attention and family life but is equally happy to be left for 4/5 hours while I'm at work.
We also had one when I was a teenager and living at home and she had the same temperament.

user784204 · 09/07/2017 21:32

I'd say a lab?

Our first was a lab, so easy to train with food! Very cuddly and good with anyone

sparechange · 10/07/2017 02:09

Vizlas are lovely dogs, but they are very energetic and need a lot of exercise in all weathers. They have a lovely temperament but they are highly strung and stay puppyish forever...

Fine when your DH is around to run with it, but you need a back up plan of when he is away/injured/can't be arsed
Once they get used to a long run every day, there is no backing out of it!

A lab would tick all those boxes but would probably moult more than a vizla. It would be easier to train, and I would strongly recommend getting one from working lines, as they will have much better body shape and breeding to deal with the long runs. Show line labs have shorter legs and stockier bodies so are a lot less athletic.

A cocker spaniel might be another option. They have longer coats but don't have a double coat like a lab, so won't moult as much. Again, working lines will be much more suited to you than show lines

Maddogs · 10/07/2017 17:01

There's a ridgeback in our puppy class and I wouldn't call it easily trainable (stubborn more like!). What about a springer spaniel? Medium sized, doesn't moult too much, loves exercise an for not too expensive to buy.

Flippetydip · 11/07/2017 16:38

I would second (or third) a lurcher. I would have gone for a lurcher but we have instead gone for a greyhound - who is adorable but definitely not a long-distance runner! In the end I was more drawn to the idea of not having to go out for long runs on the days when I didn't feel like it. This way I can run with the hound for a mile or two and drop her home and carry on if I feel like it, or not.

My brother-in-law has a Vizla - they need a LOT of exercise and apparently have the potential to be quite "vocal" which I have to say would put me off.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 11/07/2017 16:45

I have a cavalier cross working cocker and she's perfect! The love and loyalty of a cav and the fun and energy of the working cocker.

Flippetydip · 11/07/2017 17:10

Annnd I just realised I spelt vizsla incorrectly. I am reporting myself to pedant's corner.
