Canine pancreatitis anyone?

Just looking for anyones experiences with this? My ddads dog (a scruffy haired JRT) has just been diagnosed with pancreatitis, he has had an awful few days with diarrhoea and vomiting which we thought was a stomach bug but got rapidly worse in the last 48 hours.

The vet has kept him in over night and we are all worried sick Sad he is a lovely dog, only 7 yo. The vet seems to think he could recover although its not certain at the moment...

It's a really unpleasant disease -poor pup, and often dogs do recover but it can be very serious.

He'll likely need extended hospitalisation to manage his pain and ensure he's getting fluids. When he comes home he'll need careful dietary management and low fat food to avoid triggering another episode

Sorry to hear about your ddad's dog. I hope he gets better soon.

My dog has recently recovered from pancreatitis. He's only young so nobody really understands what caused it and we might go and see a specialist to try to work out what's going on. He seems absolutely fine now, about 6 weeks on, but he was really unwell initially.

Like you we were worried sick. He had several days at the vet on fluids as he wouldn't eat and was vomiting. Once he started eating again he recovered relatively quickly, with medication although it did take a little while for him to be completely back to his bouncy self. He's now medication free, and we're managing his diet quite carefully (tricky with a hoover dog!). So, there's no reason you ddad's dog shouldn't recover as long as he was seen in time and depending on the seriousness.

Thanks for replying, thats reassuring that your dog recovered hometown my ddads dog remains at the vet in a serious condition, they think he might have an infection as well Sad Can I ask what sort of dog you have? Apparently it is more common in some breeds (terriers) than others.

He's a dachshund, so not a breed who are known to be vulnerable to it.

How is the dog doing today? I hope he starts to recover soon. At least in the vet you know he's in the right place to be looked after.

I have just heard from my dad that he does seem a bit better today and may even be allowed home tomorrow! Yes the vets have been amazing, we honestly thought he wasn't going to recover, he looked so ill!!

Just keep fingers crossed that this isn't going to be an ongoing issue for him....

I'm so glad to hear he's a bit better. Is he home today? I'm also worried about my dog having this as an ongoing issue, so totally see where you're coming from. Hopefully it'll just be a one off though.

He is home but spoke to my dad earlier who said he isn't himself at all, very quiet and sleeping lots. They have to go back to the vets on Monday, apparently they also think he had another infection as well.

Am crossing everything that he will pick up soon, bless him.

So sorry to hear about your dad's pooch - it's so scary at the time. I was recommended this food because it's low fat and good quality:

and a year on there's been no other episodes. She loves it and looks better than ever! I highly recommend.
