Dogs and cats

I have 2 cats and neighbour who is at the end of my garden has a big Alsatian. We have a fence separating the 2 gardens. My cats are mainly house cats but will come in the garden on nice days (like today). Always come in when called and never out if we aren't there.

Anyway, twice in as many weeks the cats have been in the garden for most of the day as is the dog. Occasional sniffing and odd bark but ok. Cats only stay in our garden. This evening I came inside to start Dinner, then heard one of the cats racing to the house, tail fluffy looking petrified and I look to the end of the garden and the Alsatian has broken a hole in the fence and pushed his head through (aka 'here's Johnny!')

How can I make sure the cats are safe in the garden - I don't watch them all the time. I want them to feel relaxed and enjoy it. And the dog as well, we've been here less than a year so first summer in this house. Cat is currently hiding and seemingly very sorry for herself.

Thought I'd put it in here as dog owners might have a better idea than cat owners (I'm clueless!)

It's your neighbour's responsibility to keep the dog in their property... if they're unaware that he's in the process of breaking out, just nip round and tell them, if they're even half decent dog owners they'll secure it.

I'd be mortified in my dogs were to scare a neighbour's cat by trying breaking-and-entering. Definitely let them know and explain your concerns.
