Argh, following the lost claw, the wound keeps healing over and then after hours of ignoring it DDog will suddenly just bite it and open it up again.

How can I stop this? Will it have to be a cone? How does that work overnight? Presumably they can't sleep in it? Help! I'm away and DH is losing patience with it. I'm back tomorrow but would like to be able to get this healed as quickly as possible.

Could you bandage it with vetwrap? Cone of shame would probably work but flipdog will hold it against you forevermore

LumelaMme · 02/07/2017 06:58

They can sleep in the cone of shame. They detest it, though.

We uses the cone during the day and then covered it at night.

It was a nightmare. It got infected and got swollen when we didnt cover it. Because she kept opening it up. She went on to ABs

So cone then cover at night was the only way to help it heal.

Do the cone.
It can come off when they are on lead but otherwise keep it on or your dog will keep chewing.
I used liver paste to entice our dog to wear it. He wasn't happy but it stopped him endlessly licking his stitches. A couple of days and it will be forgotten.

villainousbroodmare · 02/07/2017 07:13

They sleep in it. It's usually a better way of preventing self-trauma than bandaging as air gets to the site. Sooner you let healing start, the sooner it'll be over.

Definitely try the cone but do double check she can't actually reach her foot. Pointy dogs can be amazing contortionists and the cone needs to be pretty long to stop them getting to their feet, especially the back ones.

The cone isn't great but they do get used to it, including sleeping ok in it. Watch your shins though!!

It had all dried up beautifully by the time I got home last night - and now it's open again - but not looking at all red or inflamed. I'm leaving it open for the time being but sitting with her so she doesn't lick it. For the most part she doesn't seem interested. I think we're going to have to get the cone though.....

If you roll up old towel ino thick sausage shape, wrap around dogs neck and fix to itself with gaffa tape, works like come of shame but they don't object so strongly and your legs and paintwork don't suffer as much!

tkband3 · 03/07/2017 12:14

You can buy inflatable collars like this which are more comfortable than cones. Or a fabric cone: like this.

Miaow poor you and poor Cornetto-boy, that's sounds awful (but I have to say "depressed Ikea uplighter" did make me laugh!

Claw is getting better I think. She's not bothering with it at all now and it seems to be healing up beautifully. I may eat those words tonight if she gives it a chewing but we'll see.
