Could someone advise on whether it is worth reporting a dog on dog attack?

My lovely but very timid 4 year old female Weimaraner was attacked yesterday by a young female Alsatian. She sustained 4 deep puncture wounds to her back and side as the dog attacked as mine ran away (I found her hiding behind a tree). It was horrendous and both my girl and i were incredibly shook up by it all. The owner of the Alsatian has said he will foot the vet bill (whether this happens who knows) but what i would like some advice on whether I should report this to the police? The vet said it was unlikely the police would do anything but fell short of saying either way. The owner is adamant that his dog has never attacked another dog before and this incident could be female dominance/heat/insert other reason here. I guess my worry is what if it goes for another dog or heaven forbid a child? Could anyone provide any advice on this please? And if i do report, what should I expect to happen? Thanks in advance

I would report it to your local dog warden. They will be able to advise you. Sorry about your dog I hope she'll be ok.

I'd report to the dog warden , a dog that attacks a dog isn't necessarily likely to attack a human . I assume you have the persons contact details for the vet bill , have you checked that they gave you their real number etc.

Sorry forgot to say hope your dog feels better soon.

Do report but dog aggression does not necessarily mean that they will be aggressive with a human. However if it goes for another dog it may not be such a mild ending especially if the dogs smaller. Owner should be taking it more seriously if it was my dog I'd have been reassuring the first would be the last and she would be muzzled and on a lead whilst out from now on. I hope your dog is ok soon.

I would report it, if nothing else to make sure the owner to muzzles it. I don't think prosecution is likely and the dog won't be destroyed or anything like that.

I'm not defending the dog but sometimes things do just happen, my nervous dog chased and bit another out of the blue and it was mortifying. She had been friendly to loads of dogs but always was the dog who avoided others if she was worried and I hadn't had any issues with her going up to dogs at all. I was mortified and never allowed her around others off lead or unmuzzled again but these things unfortunately can happen.

I hope your dog recovers well Sad

Thank you very much for your replies, I will report to the dog warden as suggested in the morning.

And thank you for asking after her, she seems absolutely fine and she is some how asleep on the sofa with one of those plastic cones round her head.
