Confused! Had conflicting advice about dog food.

I'm fostering a dog with severe behavioural issues. Trying to make sure her food isn't contributing but been given totally conflicting advice. 1. Get her off any kibble, as it's just carbs/sugar. 2. Get her off any wet food, as it's too high in protein. Don't know what to do for the best now. Can anyone help?

I find everyone has a different 'opinion' . My 'advice' is have a read but decide what's best for you and the dog.

Kibble works for me as it is more practical. I looked on allaboutdogfood.co.uk to find one that scored high and the dog liked.

A canine behaviourist told me to check the protein levels of the food. Anything with over 15% protein is a no for dogs with behavioural problems. So in working dog mixes you will find high protein levels because these dogs need a lot of energy but your average pet needs a lot less.

Wet, dry or raw is really a choice that suits you and your dog not anyone else.

The thing is, it depends which dry food and which wet food as to whether they're full of carbs and sugar or high in protein.

Raw food is a short cut to cutting out problematic foods. Join a forum, read up on it, don't just dive in. I feed mine raw chicken (yes it's ok), pork shoulder, beef mince, liver and kidney, mainly from supermarkets. It makes sense, if you think about it.

Cost wise it's comparable to a good quality kibble. Although I have the greediest dog in the world who eats double what he should,.,

Kibble is fine! Just check the ingredients, the first one listed aka the main ingredient you want to be meat - not meat derivatives - and grain free. If you're changing the food try and get a sensitive one to try to avoid upset stomach issues!

Agree get her onto dry food only as soon as poss and read the protein labels. Defo under 15%. Any wet food is shocking on their teeth and turns them into fussy eaters. Just go good quality dry food rather than supermarket cheapest, and if shes still being a little picky after a couple of days (though she wont starve herself...shell eat a scabby insole when she finally gets hungry) but a splash of boiling water releases the fat content in dry food and makes it more inviting.
