A couple near me have been walking an emaciated greyhound. I know they're supposed to be thin but every bone was sticking out, he was painful to look at. I had to school myself not to say something, but he was wearing a little coat so I knew they must care about him and that he's probably just come out of rescue. Well, today I saw him walking in the sun without coat, and definitely with more weight on him. He's still very very thin, but a little bit of muscle has come in around his hips now and his ribs aren't sticking out quite as far. I was so happy Smile. I want to rescue one when I have my own house, maybe next year.

We have our second rescue - she's quite hard work at the moment as everything frightens her. She is calming down, very slowly, and she loves being at home with us. She's also quite skinny! They are a lovely, lovely dog to own

Past few days I keep seeing a heavily pregnant lab. Each vertebrae along her spine is clearly visible and her shoulders and bum look like bones with skin stretched over. First time I was just horrified. The second time, I noticed that the teenager walking this dog had another lab off lead, who looks in fabulous health (perfect weight, glossy fur, full of energy, etc). So I'm now hopeful that the pregnant one has just been rescued.

People often judge wrongly though, I got reported once regarding my pony. He was an old pony and had been ill. This had meant he lost a lot of weight (he was thin but not extremely so, as we'd previously had problems with him being on the chunky side). Him and one of my other ponies got moved into another paddock where there was more grass, to help get his weight back up. That paddock was next to a road on one edge - it had a good tall thick hedge, the only bit people could get to was the gate there, so we locked it and put another fence inside the gate to make sure people couldn't feed them. So somebody reported us for starving him! He was in a 5acre paddock with long lush grass and being fed hard feed twice per day, to get his weight back up and his companion pony was in superb condition. RSPCA woman who turned up was obviously very pissed off they'd been called out to him.

We've just got a greyhound who is apparently fat for a greyhound - she still looks pretty skinny to me. They do often come out of rescue in bad condition. Ours has a horrible coat at the moment - I'm told it will get better.

She is the most delightful dog to have around the house though -so so calm and lovely. I thoroughly recommend one and there are SO many that need homes.

I will have to get one that is fine with cats (see username) but I've met one who lived with cats before. Bones stretched over skin is a good way to put it.

He looked so bad before I was surprised they were walking him - I wouldn't think he could spare the calories. But I guess since he is gaining, albeit slowly, they know what they're doing.

One of my childhood friends (deaf & can't speak clearly, with vision & mobility problems) got a service dog which she will train up herself. The dog arrived very morbidly obese. Friend was mortified that people would think she made that dog so insanely fat. Plus she can't easily explain it's a new rescue or the history. So yeah, good idea not to rush to judgement.

Dottymum2 · 17/06/2017 10:51

Have to admit I have never considered a grey but since owning a dog have met some lovely lovely ones and now would definitely have one, beautiful dogs x

I know that was unrelated to the post a bit but just felt the need to say it!

Ilove yes she is huge (although that is only a two-seater sofa so it's perhaps not as bad as it looks?). She uses the sofa all the time except on a Wednesday evening when we have a church group which meets at our house and then she is relegated to the basket but she seems to do it willingly enough.....hasn't bitten either of the two old men that sit on "her" sofa yet, but give it time, she's quite new to us Grin
