Little dog spayed today and feeling very glum!

Little dog has been home since 5 after being sprayed today and is a bit more awake but still dozy, just lying on the sofa with me. Have taken her out but she hasn't had a wee yet. Refusing food and water but will lick water off my hands! I'm camped on the sofa with her tonight. Wound looks fine and she's not distressed so I'm assuming it's just taking her a while to come round. Any tips to help her feel better?

That should say spayed, not sprayed!!!

I think it can take a day or so to be back to their normal self after the operation due to the anaesthetic.

Thanks. I have rung the vet and they are going to give me some painkillers to give her. She's more awake today and had my crust of toast(!) but is reluctant to walk so I think is in pain.

The anaesthetic can knock them a bit sideways. UnbornDog took about 3 days to pull herself round iirc.

Hope she feels better soon, it's not nice seeing them so down.

Thank you, good to know it's within the realms of normal

I always cook mine some plain chicken and rice after an op as it's nice and gentle on their tummies after anaesthetic and they just love it.

But it can take a couple of days for th n to be back to normal after a spay so please don't worry.

And ps sometimes it can be a good thing when they are quieter for a few days post spay as it can be a nightmare when they are bouncing around like normal as you don't want them to pull their stitches!

Thanks for your reassurance. I rang the vet this afternoon as she was whimpering a bit - I have some metacam to give her and she's perked up and eaten some plain chicken. Result! She looks more comfortable now. As you say I'm quite glad she's not bouncing around though!

Modern anaesthetics are eliminated within a couple of hours. Dogs with behaviours changed post op are usually painful not 'woozy'
Sad

As with unborn, it probably took three days for littledog here to get over the anaesthetic and start being her normal self after spaying.

She did seem to just be sleepy rather than in pain but definitely not herself for a few days.
