Eating cat pooh - bleurgh

Our newly adopted greyhound is settling in brilliantly and proving to be the perfect addition to the family.

The only DISGUSTING thing is that she eats cat pooh - I can't always get there before her and unfortunately the cats of our neighbour use our garden as their toilet. I hoped getting DDog would stop them coming in but apparently not.

She always rushes out first thing in the morning for an early snack and it's disgusting. Is there anything I can do to discourage this?

Unfortunately cats are obligate carnivores and to dogs their poo is just as tasty as the food that went in.

I'd look at it from another angle and try and keep the cats away.

Work on a really strong 'leave' cue too.

Totally normal, ours do it all the time if they get the chance Blush

My pup does this too

Oh and horse poo. She always eats that! Urgh

My ds had his first poo in the potty a few weeks ago - he went off to shout of df and ddog ate it before he could show it off!!
Gross. .

Justmade - I'm sorry, that made me laugh so much!

I think I could cope with horse pooh, it's just the cat pooh that grosses me out.

Yep, my greyhound is the same. It made me sick at first but it's amazing what you get used to. All you can do is try and get there before them but as you say it isn't always possible. Grim creatures.

Cat poop is a delicious treat here for both of my dogs, so I have a well covered cat litter tray as they treat it as a buffet otherwise, fox poop is second favourite, often having a a quick snack before rolling in it, followed by sheep/cow/horse poop, dogs are foul foul creatures but I love them so I forgive them, but yes a strong leave it can work but it's hard to resist when cat poo is the treasure they've discovered.

Mine eats cat poo and cow pats Shock Cannot walk through a field without her beelining them and stuffing her face. She's also eaten her own poo from the garden Confused

Wolfiefan · 17/06/2017 21:14

Take her out on the lead for the first week of the day?
Wolfie pup decided back in the winter that frozen rabbit poo was the best teething remedy! Shock

Our late Lab used to do this when she was younger (or we weren't looking). She'd pick the poo out of the cat box, all covered in cat litter. We called it 'Kitty Roca'.

You can train a dog to stop when you see them doing it. Our late Lab and our (current) Dachsie were both trained to drop whatever is in their mouths the we say (very sternly) 'drop it'.

Violetcharlotte · 17/06/2017 22:55

My Springer does the same. He knows the spots in the neighbours garden where the cats tend to go and makes a bee line for it every morning. So disgusting!

mortificado · 17/06/2017 23:27

Our frencie empties the litter tray' before me every day! It's a good job she's cute!

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 19/06/2017 13:38

Funnily enough mine will eat every other type except cat poop.

Possibly they are too lazy to dig it up as we don't have a litter tray. (Either that or the cats are shitting in next door's veg patch which has always been my worry and the topic of many an AIBU thread!)
