Tummy troubles after painkillers

Hoping someone can offer a little advice.
I have an elderly JRx (10/11 maybe older we are unsure) and he did in his cruciate ligament. Vet decided not to put him through surgery due to age and problems with other leg.

He has been on loxicom about 2 months now and a joint supplement. We started at different times in case one annoyed him and sure enough a week or 2 into the joint supplement he started eating grass and doing number 2s that were a bit reddish looking so we took him off it. He was better for a while but then got worse again so we stopped loxicom and took him to the vet as I know NSAIDs can cause stomach probs.

She did blood test for his his kidneys - all fine - and gave us omeprazole on Friday for 5 days. Problem is today he will not eat anything other than grass, is vomiting, and clingy - which is a problem itself as he is a rescue who gets agitated being inside.

We will obviously phone vet first thing to get him seen, but I'm very worried and not keen to put him back on loxicom this week like the vet suggested. Obviously he needs to be on a painkiller but I don't want to give him serious stomach issues into the bargain.

Incidentally she has just discovered he has a heart murmur too. I am so worried for my boy. Does anyone have any experience with similar?

Just bring him back tomorrow. There are injectable anti-ulcer medications and anti-nausea medications, and there are also other options for pain relief besides NSAIDs.

Thank you! I will bring those things up with the vet tomorrow if she doesn't suggest them first. I am just fretting about him as he is an old boy now :(

DDog2 doesn't tolerate NSAIDs well at all but needs regular painkillers (she's got mild IVDD and arthritis in her hips as well as a heart murmur) so she's on tramadol. She's been on it quite a while now and is doing really well.

Thats great to hear cornflake hopefully we will get him something to settle his stomach tomorrow and we can get an alternative. So glad your dog is doing ok x

This happened DD4, the anti inflammatories made him so sick he stopped eating for days even after stopping the tablets. :(

He started a different one, along with omeprazole and did really well. There are other options the vet will try.

Pup is staying in overnight, on a drip. had ultrasound, possible mass found . Hoping he has just ate some stones on the sly but it would be unlike him so we will know more in the morning :(

Just home with him, much perkier after being on fluids and eating a little at a time. Unfortunately what showed on his initial x-ray is still there but vet thinks if his stomach settles down it is something he can live with for however long he is with us. Not 100% good news but I'm much happier to have my boy home anyway

Good stuff. As long as he feels all right, that's actually all that matters.

LilaBard · 13/06/2017 18:21

Yep that's the view I take at the age he's at, as long as he is pain free and happy we can muddle through Smile
