I'm so surprised and impressed - DDog has a talent!

My Ddog is 4, virtually no recall, rarely responds to name, cannot retrieve, very bad social skills, can't find treats, runs in wrong direction for things (we actually think she is a little mentally impaired). Disclaimer, have attempted training and behaviourists, she just is a one-off and we adore her.

However, she actually plays ball with me. I roll the ball to her, she tackles it and controls it skillfully and passes it back to me. If it goes in a random direction, she waits for me to get it and roll back to her, then she repeats. If it's nearer to her, she will get it and roll it to me. It's a calculated game of pass the ball and she clearly gets it and I'm so proud (this may be a normal dog trick but i don't have abnormal dog 😂)

Are you sure she's not just pretending to be stupid ?

I have a pet that plays a blinder at it and sometimes I forget he's actually quite clever when he wants something. Just not when I want him to do something.

Is she a collie?

OhWellNeverMindEh · 10/06/2017 21:58

Not a collie.

If she's pretending she is very, very good at it Grin

She's not a little deaf, is she? Just asking because when my lab is running for the ball, she sometimes only knows its direction because she hears it land. She's brilliant at sniffing it out if she's not seen where it landed, but she does often rely on her ears, too. Not all dogs have such a sensitive smell sense so it could be that she just can't hear you.

So, when you play with a ball close up, she sees exactly what's happening and responds accordingly. Just a thought.

So when the ball goes in a direction not near her, she expects you to get it?

I'm not so sure she's daft. She has you well trained!
