How do I know if my dog needs hand stripping

I have a tiny wiry haired rescue terrier and I have no idea whether he needs hand stripping or not. He has wiry hair on his body, but silky hair on his head, does he need a combination on both?!

We've had him clipped before and it's made him go all fluffy, so I'm not sure what to do next. I don't want him to be sweltering through the summer, but also don't want to muck up his coat. Help!

I thought that if you've had them
Clipped once you have to keep on doing it . My friend has a border terrier who is stripped - we were talking about it the other day .

Can you go to a different groomers, and discuss it with them? They should know about the different types of coat and how to maintain it.

It is possible to swap to stripping after the coat has been clipped.

I think your best bet is to find a groomer who hand strips and get them to have a look at him. They should be able to tell you if he's suitable to be stripped or not.

Thanks! I'll try and find a local groomer who hand strips and take him in. He's bit of a fragile soul though, so hopefully i can track one down nearby Grin

He's sweet.

Ive got a similar rescue, I don't have her stipped. I just brush her and she's fine. If she was knotting up or too hot perhaps I would, but generally I never quite understand the point of stripping coats, but I've always had big dogs until this one. Our dog has a grass allergy anyway, cand the vet says her hair will protect her, so not to take it off.

You can work a clipped coat back to a stripped one, it just takes time. I imagine you'll have quite the issue finding a groomer who will strip though, and it will be costly - most these days are of the clip 'em off brigade, cheap and quick for them if not for the owners.

You can learn to strip yourself too. He does look from the pics as if stripping might suit him - maybe try and find a good groomer who will start him off and show you how to do it, then you can just do a bit little and often to keep him tidy?
