Food for a better coat

We have an eight year chocolate Lab. he's a good healthy weight but o worry that his coat is very dry and coarse. Not like other labs I see who have a glossy and soft coat. Are there any suggestions of what food I could be using to help?

I cant comment on labs, but my cockapoos coat has improved immensely since I have put her on Tails.com food! It really surprised me tbh!

Try a fish oil capsule every day. My lab's coat is shiny, it often gets commented on. He's raw fed.

I did the months free trial because I am a cheapskate and love a bargain Blush, and It's actually really good so I have switched her from her barking heads.

Sardines in tomato sauce or olive oil will help, mine go mad on nights where they get 'deens with their dinner. Also eggs- raw, scrambled or hard bolied as well as shells (crushed).

Lots of fish based stuff. Dried fish skin, sprats, fish oil. Vet recommended stuff called Viacutan Plus when my dog's coat was very dry. It works brilliantly. It's a mix of fish and borage oil. It was expensive from the vet, but you can get it for half the price I paid on the net, and it lasts for ages.

We feed our collie Science Plan and she has a lovely sleek and shiny coat.

Another saying fish oil. I use a humans one (he gives me big eyes when i'm sorting my own) and he gets lots of compliments.

I raw feed and my dogs coat is glossy. I've never met a raw fed dog with a bad coat!

If you don't wish to feed raw then fish oil. Coconut oil added to the food as well

There's a really really good website called www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk that lists the foods in quality/price etc and I fed mine Millie's Wolfheart, which is dried kibble. He has the odd bit of cooked chicken, scrambled egg, sardines in olive oil and he has a teaspoon of salmon oil on his food every day. His black coat shines like glass. The rating for Tails aren't that great, it has alot of cereal in but you can only try it.

Oscars, raw meat and a raw egg a couple of times a week. My black labrador's coat is practically iridescent.

sparechange · 04/06/2017 10:50

Raw food. Our lab is so soft and glossy, DH halfjokes about making a scarf from her when she dies!

We feed Nutriment and Natures Menu

Eden Holistic is fabulous food. No grains, no rosemary and all human grade food.
Supplement with coconut oil.
Raw food and raw lamb bones for variety.
You'll notice a difference in coat and probably odour of dog.

IntheBenefitTrap · 07/06/2017 10:49

Raw food diet.

Rightpivotturn · 07/06/2017 13:09

Our are on Fish4Dogs plus a weekly Friday treat of sardines, plus occasional treats Blush of the Fish4Dogs Whipped Trout Mousse.

They all have coats like silk and gleam wondrously in the sun. Fish oils and oily fish are definitely the way to go. Smile

SOckDog gets an egg every few days and we feed some locally made food which suits her skin and coat. She is much glossier than when she had dry food.
