Titre test before vaccinating.

Distemper, parvo and hep are recommended every three years but there are reports that many dogs are immune for longer.

Do many of you do the titre test before vaccinating? Does it give a count or is it just lumped in to high med low immunity categories?
How much does it cost?

I titre test Smile

It gives a count - but your vet will explain what is good/bad.

If your dog has been vaccinated he/she will be fine. You can't boost immunity, there's no such thing. They're either immune or they're not - titre tests show their immunity to whatever diseases you want tested, so for example if you have a titre done and it shows immunity for parvo there is absolutely no need to have a booster done.

The practice I work in charges £50 however it varies depending where you go.

I am pleased the guide is 3 years now instead of annually and that this info is finally becoming common knowledge. However, it can still be really difficult to find a vet who will titre test, so good for you for doing this. I hope one day it will be the norm as I bet in most cases every 3 years is still unnecessary. Titre testing is definitely the way forward.

Do you only titre test once in a dog life? So if they have immunity they do not need to have a titre test again?

What do you do about Lepto - is that covered in titre test - I was told it only lasts a year but how does that work if you have immunity for life?

Exactly user - the whole point of boosters is to "boost their immunity" to the diseases they've already been vaccinated against. But you can't boost immunity there's no such thing. My dog is either immune to something or she isn't. Boosters are just a way for the vets to make money. The vaccine manufactures themselves advise using their vaccines only once every 3 years.

You can titre however often you like, it's only a blood test.
Most people who titre do so when putting their dogs into kennels as this proves they're free from whatever diseases you're testing immunity against. Basically, if you're dog has been vaccinated against a disease then it'll show immunity UNLESS at the time of vaccination it had a weakened immune system.
