Sorry, more advice about a rescue greyhound

Hi

I know I've been here and asked things a million times about greyhounds - please be patient!

I just spoke to our local rescue again (90 minutes away). They have myriad dogs apparently that would be suitable for us. It's likely they will accept our home check report from Hounds First which was fine. However, the lady at this rescue is saying 10 weeks will be fine to have a dog and then take it back to them for a week while we go on holiday. She thinks it's a shame to miss out on a summer with an ideal dog because of one week.

My thought was that a dog will just be settled and then we take it back to kennels - won't it be horribly confused?

Any thoughts/advice please?

Thanks

That does sound like a short time to be honest. Would it be possible to get a house sitter instead so that the dog stays in his/hers familiar environment if you still want to go ahead with the holiday?

The holiday is not in question, it's just whether we get a dog before or after.

I can't get a house sitter as a colleague is coming to use the house whilst we're away and it's quite a bit ask to look after a dog whilst they're on holiday if they want to go out for the day etc.

Greyhounds are raised with kennel life & their routines, so are usually more at ease than average pet dogs in them and yours will possibly had reasonable time in the rescue to become familiar with the place and its people. Greyhounds tend to enjoy socialising with their own kind so your dog may not mind being back at the kennels.

It depends on dogs character how well they cope with changes, but would think a more nervous type probably wouldn't be right for a family anyway. 10 weeks isn't too bad, my 3 have generally become settled and confident in new environment by then and its only a week' without you.

If you feel it will cause more worry than its worth then just leave the adoption till you get back, while you've not fallen for a particular hound.

Thanks Scatty -- that's helpful. We have someone from the rescue coming round tomorrow so I will talk through it with her.
