Feel so sorry for DD

DD is almost 10 and a real animal lover. One of the things she loves is going to the local Greyhound Rescue with me and walking a dog or two at the weekend. We are both quite small and usually the charity are really good at matching us up with dogs and previously the dogs have always had muzzles on.

The second dog we were given today was described as "playful". We got 2/3 around the field and completely out of the blue, she goes for a DD. I'm talking full on growling, baring teeth, trying to bite her. Luckily, I had the dog on a really short lead as she had started jumping around and DD was far enough away that she didn't get attacked.

The dog did knock her though, which I think scared her.

DD walked back far enough away from us and I kept the dog on a really short lead. Told them when we got back what had happened and they seemed genuinely concerned, but surprised.

At the time DD said that she would go back again but tonight, when she's thought about it more, she says she does want to go back. Feel really awful that I've let her be in a position where she could have been attacked and now, she doesn't want to go back.

Would love some opinions from people with dog experience. Would you go back to this rescue?

Yes I would

They're dogs in rescues. Who knows what they've been through or how they've been dealt with.

I'm not saying what the dog did was okay.

But it wouldn't put me off

If you regularly go to a dog rescue, you are eventually come across aggressive dogs Confused

Does your dd understand the neglect and bad treatment some dogs receive? I am sure if you play on her heart strings a bit she will manage to see the bigger picture. .
It would be a shame for her and the dogs if you didn't go back. .

Poor girl!! She must have had a real fright.
I'd encourage her to go a couple more times (maybe explain to the centre that she's anxious so they can match you with calmer dogs until she gains confidence?) tell her that if she really feels it isn't for her after a couple more visits then that's fine, but she does need to try to face her fears first.
