So our new Labrador puppy arrives Thursday so far my non exhaustive list of things we need is

Crate (medium then a large for later)
Same food as the breeder
Appointment for the vets
Food and water bowl
Tons of newspaper
Training treats??
Floor wash? Anti bacterial spray? Recommendations?
Insurance again recommendations?
Investigate puppy training nearby
Stair gates

Thoughts on crate in bedroom / downstairs when I am expecting the dog to live downstairs once trained?

Really appreciate any thoughts and advice not a novice with dogs but our first puppy, we have DC 7 & 10 a very large garden and a park behind the house.

Join Dog Training Advice and Support on FB. Look at their new puppy info.
We never used newspaper. Train pup straight to go outside. (Details on how to do this on the FB page.)
You need a special cleaner really to kill the smell so they don't go back to the site of any accidents.
Toys. Especially things to chew! Nylabone and kongs are good. Puppies chew.
Vet fleece makes a good washable bed.
For training. Look for positive and reward based training. Avoid anyone who talks about dominance avoid!!

Posted too soon. I slept with pup in kitchen for three weeks. I would keep pup near you to start with. Saves toilet accidents too.

No newspaper or pads. Simple Solution pet accident spray and a lot of Regina kitchen roll (my preffered mopping up paper product). Nappy bags. If you have hard floors, a microfibre pad mop and a spray bottle of floor cleaner so you can have a quick whizz round umpteen times a day as you'll be in and out a lot.

Pair of crocs and a big warm dressing gown for you.

Training treats and a dog whistle, plus the Total Recall dog training book.

Lots and lots of things for your pup to chew. Scatter them everywhere so you always have one to hand to substitute as soon as they think about chewing something they shouldn't.

Fleece blankets for the crate. My preferred bedding for pups as they are so easily washed, poo just falls off, and they are cheap and resistant.

Huge amounts of patience, and very firm words with all of the family about behaviour around the pup - for instance you never, ever let them do something that won't be cute when they are a great big adult dog. So toe nibbling, jumping up, jumping on your lap, face licking are all cute in a puppy - they won't be in a few months so don't tolerate it now or encourage with giggling.

Patience.
Collar and lead - won't burt to have a name tag ready either, even if the pup can't go our for the first few weeks.

There are some really good sites regarding children and puppies. The dog will be easy to train, children a little harder! Labradors do everything with their mouths and although they are known for soft mouths they have to learn. Even at 12mnths they still like to chew your hands. Be prepared for lots of tears and tantrums.
Nothing is safe if left within reach, your DC will learn to put things away very quickly. Our lab is now 12 months + and likes to find socks. She has learnt to open my DS sock drawer, fortunately she doesn't eat them like our last lab did. And forget about your lovely lawn and garden. Ours could dig a large crater in seconds even at 10weeks old.
They are totally worth it, my beautiful girl is cuddling up to me as I type. She loves me unconditionally and I her despite her regressed recall. But we are working on it.
I found out accidentally that they really don't like Vicks vapour rub. This magic stuff saved my kitchen and the skirting boards.
