Which dog breed do I want?

I know this has been done to death, but I would love to get some help with this. I am planning on a getting a dog in the next 6 months or so, having lost my old Lab, but haven't a clue which breed I need, I have looked online at breed profiles, and none tick all my boxes too fussy!

I would ideally like:

Medium size
non shedding (as much as poss) and not smelly (been there, done that!)
Lowish energy around the house, but able to come for 30 min slow runs.
Low chase drive (I have a cat)
Healthy, and fairly robust (no squashed noses etc)

That doesn't seem too difficult, but I can't find anything that grabs me.
I would like to get the dog through a rescue charity, so knowing a breed would help with my search. I know there are some wonderful mongrels out there, but I would like to narrow down my search.
Looks wise I would love a long-hair dachshund, but with long legs and not out of proportion.

Anyone got any ideas?

How about a poodle? And a pure one, not a designer crossbreed. No shedding, no smell. Mine doesn't seem to chase either. Intelligent and loving dogs.

WellErrr · 04/05/2017 12:59

Yes, poodle!

fessmess · 04/05/2017 13:02

Ditto, I was going to say poodle too. I have a poodle cross (mostly poodle) and she's gorgeous. TBH if I was to have another go I'd get a pure-bred one, ashamed to say I shied away as they didn't grab me, think they're not "cool." They are SO loving and gorgeous. Mine wants to play with our cats, one will the other just hisses at her!

Have thought about a greyhound? Ours is an ex racer and although would chase rabbits out on walks, is absolutely fine with cats. There are many in rescues that have never even raced and even some that have are cat compatible. Fit all other criteria and are absolutely wonderful peta

Found you a dawg, OP! Admittedly not much taller than a dachshund.

The sole problem I have with (smaller) poodles is that very particular ear-splitting yip.

Tibetan terriers are great and slightly less tooth-shattering when they bark.

CMOTDibbler · 04/05/2017 13:12

How about a small, smooth coated lurcher? Lots of lurchers in rescue, some of whom are cat safe and they have very little coat and don't smell. No grooming needed either. Mine love going for a run with me, then sleep. They aren't needy dogs in general.

I have two lurchers, two cats, three chickens and foster puppies for EGLR. The puppies don't seem to have an issue with cats, so its not a rare trait

That dog is beautiful flying! Just want to cuddle him!
I forgot on my list...not too yappy/barky...... I'm quite quiet and I like my dogs to be too Grin
Are poodles yappy? I don't know of any personally.

Well my poodle isn't yappy. She barks if someone comes to the door and that's it. However, I have also had Yorkies and a jrt, and none of them were yappy either. I have always been quite firm about my dogs not barking excessively, I never encourage them to bark and it seems to result in a quiet dog. Perhaps I've just been lucky.

Miniature schnauzer. Fantastic little dogs. And Many Tears have a few puppies at the moment www.manytearsrescue.org/display_mtar_dog.php?id=19036

Tristram is gorgeous!

Tibetan Terrier
Medium size- ok medium to small
non shedding (as much as poss) and not smelly (been there, done that!)- have beautiful long flowing coat and don't shed to much, you also have tested option to keep them short
Lowish energy around the house, but able to come for 30 min slow runs. - your TT will be taking all the exercise he can get & loves to chill on the sofa afterwards!
Low chase drive (I have a cat) - definitely not a hunting breed, but still a dog ... my girls will stay with me, my boy has his own agenda!
Healthy, and fairly robust (no squashed noses etc) - if you buy a health tested dog, a TT is exactly that.

What about a Border? You'll have to train it to respect cats, but they are clever and learn quickly.
