The right way to get a dog.

My 2 dogs are rescues as is the dog I'm going to be adopting very soon. I've just had a really awful conversation with someone I consider to be my best friend about the fact that she judges me for only rescuing puppies. She herself rescues only adult dogs. When I tried to press my point that as a mother of young children, I'd like to be able to have a dog without major previous behavioural issues (she doesn't have children so it's a little easier for her to deal with issues), she became very agitated and said that it didn't matter, to say I rescue dogs is wrong as I'm not a true rescuer. Who is right here, me or her?

Neither of you are buying horribly inbred pedigrees or designer crosses, so what's the issue? It's not doggy altruism top trumps.

You have to get the right dog for your circumstances. We didn't rescue as not one rescue would give to us. They were absolutely right as first time owners, with two dcs and two cats.
We have a dog which we got from a puppy. He is lovely and had taken/takes lots of training.

BTW we have a lovely designer cross Hmm.
And we wanted to rescue because we thought we should....

Christ, talk about holier than thou one-upmanship.

A dog is a dog. You've picked the best option for your family. She's picked the one that works for her.

There is not right or wrong. Tell her to stick her attitude, and be happy the pup or dog is getting a loving home.

We have a rescue that came to us as a young adult and a pure bred (purchased) from a puppy Smile TBH I'd never have a puppy again, rescue or purchase, it was harder than a toddler.

They are both amazing though.

A rescue dog is a rescue dog, makes no difference how old it is as to whether it came from a rescue.

But, adult rescues don't all come with behavioural issues, most just need the same basic training you do with a puppy...and getting a puppy doesn't ensure you'll get a dog without issues.

But honestly - it's a weird argument altogether, it's never occurred to me to call myself a rescuer when I've owned a dog that came from a rescue or to think of myself as rescuing them.

That's what the organisation did, not me...

And your friend is even odder, what does she think would happen to puppies in a rescue if people didn't rehome them?

She's nuts.
Rescues also need people to adopt puppies and not everyone wants the hassle of a puppy. Puppies are handed into rescue and born in rescue every day of the week.

Your friend is bonkers.
