How much does it cost you to feed your dog?

Ddog has a very sensitive stomach, he's also a big dog. We've found a food that he's doing well on but it's costing us £2 a day. Which seems a little excessive but maybe I'm being a bit tight! I don't really mind spending it but I'm also a bit concerned about his teeth if he's only on wet food, I just can't find a dry one that suits him.

My lab has Burns chicken and rice (dried food), very good for sensitive stomachs. A big bag is about £45-48 and I think it lasts us about 6 weeks.

I am not actually sure how long it lasts to be honest but more than a month, probably less than two.

BarchesterFlowers · 28/04/2017 18:58

This.

Firm poo and a very healthy dog, she has been on it forever - since a pup and she is 12.

Boynamedsue · 28/04/2017 19:02

Thanks barchester. I'll give it a try.

Approximately 60p in dry food (Millies Wolfheart) and 70p in wet food Forthglade/Applaws) per dog per day. They're medium sized dogs as well (ranging from 12kg to 17kg) so £2 a day doesn't seem that much to me for a bigger dog than £1.30 a day each for mine.

Are you currently brushing his teeth? If not it really does help. I can highly recommend Logic Oral Hygiene Gel as it helps their teeth even if all you can manage is to smear a bit in their mouths rather than giving them a proper brush.

Boynamedsue · 28/04/2017 19:17

We have him on Forthglade at the moment, he loves it. It's currently on offer at Morris morrisons but from next week (when the offer ends) it'll be more like £2.60 a day (plus treats obviously!) we do have a toothbrush for him but don't brush them nearly as often as we should do. I'll make that a priority. Thanks Smile

Wainwrights grain free dry food, a £30 bag lasts about a month...38kg dog.

That'd be about £1 a dayish

MarcoPoloCX · 28/04/2017 20:43

I have two dogs.
They are both raw fed.
The larger one is about 20kg and eats around 500g a day at a cost of roughly £1.50

wibblywobblyfish · 28/04/2017 20:54

I have a 35kg dog which is raw fed. He eats approx (the cats eats quite a bit of it too!) 900g of food a day. Costs me about £13 a week

clearingaspaceforthecat · 28/04/2017 20:56

60kg dog - raw fed, approx. £2 - £3 per day.

Boynamedsue · 28/04/2017 21:11

We tried him on raw but he really didn't like it. It's a shame because I do think it's the ideal food.

Mine are on Vitalin Sensitive atm, which is frequently on offer at our local country store for £26 for a 15kg bag. They are 20-25kg lurchers and cost around a pound a day to feed as fussy ddog1 likes wet food as well and can't have wheat/barley/oats

We give Royal Canin Golden Retriever Adult dry food. She does well on it. She's 2. It's £80 and lasts a couple of months. I mix with either a little rice or pasta and a wee bit of organic tray food in different flavours, to make it interesting (dry kibble wouldn't do it for me, every day!). She has 4 trays a week at £1.50. I buy basics pasta/rice.

abbey44 · 29/04/2017 00:05

I've got two large dogs - the older one costs about £30 a month for her food, the puppy is about £40 for hers for the month, plus collateral damage for whatever else she's managed to filch. Biscuits, cushions, paintbrushes...whatever she can find, really.

Three or four times a week I'll cook them some fish or chicken with rice or oats, so that's on top too.

applesareredandgreen · 29/04/2017 20:15

I spend more on ddog's food than ours!

He is nearly a year old and has rejected his kibble in favour of wet food. Originally on either wainwrights puppy food on trays or naturediet/ forthglade trays dependent on which pet store I went to. Unfortunately I then made the mistake of buying him a tin of Lily's kitchen - result he will only eat that at £2.20 a can. Luckily he's only small and eats just under a can a day plus treats.

He always has an antler to chew which helps his teeth.

JaneEyre70 · 29/04/2017 20:19

I spend probably around £50 a month on mine - he's on Millie's Wolfheart dried (brilliant as it is grain free and great quality) and he has Lilys Kitchen wet foil trays to encourage him to eat. It does sound a lot but he's very prone to colitis and that usually means around £50 - £60 per treatment at the vets so I just think it's more cost effective to buy better food for him.

GreenieGables · 30/04/2017 08:59

Mine is 27kg and raw fed, it works out at £6 a week, so about 85/90p a day!

Medeci · 30/04/2017 09:14

I don't think kibble helps clean their teeth.
My 2 large dogs are raw fed now (approx £50 month) but when they were on kibble they didn't chew it, just gulped it down in a few seconds.
Dog 2 once vomited after a few hours and the kibble came up intact.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 30/04/2017 11:31

How do you "raw feed"?

WeAllHaveWings · 30/04/2017 12:07

Millies Wolfheart, grain free good quality protein £49.99 for a 14.5kg bag. Lasts about 6-7 weeks and costs

JoffreyBaratheon · 30/04/2017 17:06

Staffy cross (small) and she eats brown rice and meat (mainly minced beef but sometimes others). So she costs around a fiver a week, to feed. I think my cat used to cost more!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 30/04/2017 17:12

Have you tried Gentle dog food? www.gentledogfood.co.uk

MrsGsnow18 · 30/04/2017 17:13

I'd approximate about £7 a week on dry food for my two (medium sized breed) I rarely buy the very large bags these days as I have limited storage space and don't like storing the food in the shed in case of mice/rats etc. So I tend to buy a £7 bag each week. I then typically spend £2-£3 every two weeks or so on a box of treats. They get left over rice/pasta/veg/potatoes and sometimes the odd bit of left over fish/chicken.

JaimeLannister · 30/04/2017 17:54

Have you looked online for Forthglade? I used to buy it on Amazon subscribe and save. Not sure if that would work out cheaper for you?

Medeci · 30/04/2017 17:56

How do you "raw feed"?
Best to google this as there are lots of ways.
Huge amount of info on the web, also Facebook groups. People can get quite heated about whether or not to give veg, whole carcasses vs minced commercial prepared raw food etc.
It's a bit like weaning babies, everyone thinks their way is the best Smile

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 30/04/2017 18:03

I cut down the bill by using subscribe and save on Amazon. I set it up to order two months in one hit, therefore getting a 15% discount, then cancelling it again. I buy Nature Diet because she won't eat dry food.
