Eeek
We've been considering it for some time and I think the time has come

I've been reading all the threads on here and I know it might take a while to find us a suitable match (cats & kids) but oooo I'm excited

A few (probably) premature questions

We raw fed our old dog. Is this advisable for greyhounds?

Do they need a bowl on a stand?

Harness or collar?

Do they wear a harness in the car that attaches to a seatbelt? Our old dog was in a crate tethered in the boot but she was much smaller

in places our garden fence is only about 4ft high. We have dogs either side and those and our own never showed any inclination to wander into each other's gardens but would this be a problem in the home check?

We're in the South West so miles away (fortunately!)

Ah you've had a lucky escape! The blue ones tend to be less common as the Irish trainers believe they're harder to train (although that's not something we've encountered). Apparently back in the day they used to drown them at birth Sad but fortunately these days there's a couple of rather successful blue racers (our boy's dad being one of them) so there are a few more appearing for rehoming.

Ahhh lovely pics. It's proving to be a bit of A Journey for us because of the fucking cat who is nasty and we don't even like very much

I've spoken to a couple of rescues and it'll just be a waiting game until a non cat killer comes along

All experiences and info and pics most welcomed in the meantime though Grin

How old is the cat Haint - is it a waiting game from that side of things?!

I can't wait - I'm getting really impatient now.

Haint · 05/05/2017 17:54

Regretfully she's only two. She's a member of our family and we'll always give her everything she needs but she's a viscous, unpleasant creature who would rather bite and scratch than have a stroke. She's always been that way.

She'll lie in wait and attack you. She'll savage you while you're putting out her food. She'll very occasionally sit on you if it's very cold but she'll have ALL her claws out. She's got toys, attention, a feliway, a cat counsellor, a lovely life. She's just a massive shit who lives to kill and we're her prey

I still wouldn't want her nose put out of joint by a new dog so we'll have to wait for one who can happily co habit with her

Oh dear - that doesn't sound a pleasant addition to the family. You're very good to put up with her. "Unfortunately", I am allergic to cats (and apparently guinea pigs - who knew?) so we've never been able to have one. Although when we lived in Africa we had a psychotic cat who I loved - he was so mental you couldn't really stroke him but he would sit next to you on the couch. I guess as we had no carpets and very few soft furnishings the allergy wasn't too bad.

I hope you find a cat-friendly grey soon. Keep us updated.

Haint, how about the gorgeous Luke who is cat safe?

I have an evil cat as well. He has mellowed a lot with time, but he attacked my leg earlier as he felt it was dinner time and I hadn't divvied up.

Haint · 06/05/2017 08:40

Oh look at Luke. He seems lovely. I'll try callling today, I've tried a couple of times over the weeks but haven't got through (not a dig - I know they're volunteers)

It can be tricky as Pip and Linda put an awful lot of contacting people into their evenings after work, and obv also have to look after their dogs! Weekends are usually better, though you still may have to call a few times to catch them

SleightOfMind · 06/05/2017 10:19

On the issue raised earlier about offlead greyhounds.
Our two new girls (also from Celia Cross) are offlead with us now.
I started the Totall Recall by Pippa Mattinson training from day 1 and they're both really good now.

It's really important to get them socialised with lots of different breeds of dogs as soon as possible. You need to make it as positive as possible and you can quite easily have your greys offlead in open spaces.
All dogs are lovely but retired greyhounds are extra special! I can't imagine life without ours!
