Whittling down a choice of dog. Would love a cavalier king charles but have accepted the risk of health issues is just to big. Next on the list is Border Terrier. Please come tell me why they are great and much better than a Cav. They look like they tick all the boxes but every time I see the chubby, subdued Eccles on Coronation Street I feel rather underwhelmed.

I have an old boy now. Nearly 14, great family dogs and mine has never had any problems with other dogs. Mine hates being groomed so is usually very scruffy. He is also stubborn but still wonderful

Our Border is 14 now and from the day we got him has been an absolute dream of a dog to own.
I've lived with dogs (mainly terriers) all my life but my Border was definitely the easiest one to train and obedience has never been an issue - he thrives on it.

Recently he's slowed down a bit and become slightly hard of hearing (now and again needs a command more than once) and we don't go on quite such long walks as we used to but health is not and never has been an issue with him.

He has a very easy going temperament, is fabulous with the DC and lives happily alongside another dog and 2 cats.
Having said that, he will chase cats that don't belong to him and dare to stray into "his" garden but snuggles up to sleep with his own felines Grin

I've never had a Cavalier so can't honestly compare the two but can confidently say I've not had any regrets about owning a Border..

Yup lumberjack - ours are definitely 100% Borders. However, she has been mistaken for a Patterdale, Cairn Terrier, and er ... a Rottweiler (!). She was carefully researched, but you wouldn't know it! Meanwhile, the rescue of unknown origin has caused zero problems ... still, wouldn't be without her :)

My BT boy.

Great dog with families. Loves a cuddle but also is raring to go when walkies. I read somewhere that borders adapt to the exercise each family provides and I think that's true.

Word of warning OP. Mine is a little terror with other male dogs. I think this is partly down to a bad experience he had as a pup but I have heard of quite a few other borders who are the same.

But he is such a lovely dog around the house. Huge part of the family.
