We have two French Bulldogs, Cleo and Heidi, a rescue Pomeranian, Lola and a rescue Beagle, Holly.

Our local rescue has had an influx of a litter of Staffy pups, there has never been more than one in the rescue before. We've been looking into getting a dog again but I've not clicked with any of them. One of the pups is gorgeous and I luffs him! He's very sweet, playful but doesn't beg for more and backs off when needed. He's a blue one btw.

  1. Would you get a Staffy?
  2. What type of exercise and stimulation would you provide for a Staffy? Our Beagle is used to help hunt hare three days a week and then returned to us in the evening, is there anything like this for Staffys?
  3. Have you got a Staffy?
  4. Are the breed good with children?
  5. Any pictures of your Staffy?
  6. Any bad things about your Staffy?

I would be wary of an adult rescue Staffy in case it was aggressive. A puppy, as long as you are competent in training, is probably less likely to be aggressive.

Staffies well-bred, treated kindly and properly trained are great dogs. Do the rescue know if these pups' parents are pedigree staffs? There can be quite a variation in size with some staffs crossed with larger bull-bred types.

Sadly my main concern with getting a rescue staff as a puppy would be the potential for them to be a cross or over height and end up being "of type" as an adult Sad

Blues can be prone to colour dilution alopecia, if affected they do need extra care taken with their skin.

They are quite active little dogs and absolutely thrive on doing things with their people. You have a crack at almost anything with a Staffy; agility, flyball, trick training, rally, obedience, etc.

Picture please??

I have an adult rescue Staffy her only danger is her backside...lethal!

With the right training and in the right hands they can be great dogs.

She's had a tough life sadly and hardly gets off the sofa nowadays!

Personally I wouldn't just from a damage limitation point of view with the smaller dogs plus I have never encountered one which seems to like other dogs, love them with people though

Mine is 13 months old. Loves people, kids, other dogs and cats... she will make friends with absolutely everyone and everything (she once licked a sheep on the nose at a game fair!).

As long as they're socialised properly they tend to have no issues with other dogs. Because you've got a small dog anyway he will probably learn what they're limitations are regarding play etc. Mine goes to my brothers when I'm at work and they have 3 Boston terriers as well as dog sitting other dogs a lot and she's never harmed another dog being too rough as far as I know. She will change how she plays and be noticeably more gentle with little dogs than big ones.

Exercise wise she gets up to 2 hours a day but is fine with less and in the house she's incredibly lazy (she's currently snoring in the sofa).

The worst thing about her is her farts she can empty a room some days! Her chewing stared at approx 6 moths old till 8/9 was a pain but as long as she had kongs, chews etc she was fine. She also thinks she's the same size as when she was 8 weeks old and is convinced at 20kg she can still fit on my lap.

Blue ones do tend to suffer more with skin allergies than other types and it's good to prepare yourself for other people's negative attitudes (my family were the worse offenders but have come round) thankfully I've never had any grief from strangers.

In short she's an incredible friendly, goofy, 20kg lap dog that follows me everywhere!

I would listen to your gut..ask peoples views on weather to get a staff or not chances are you going to get negative feedback.
Be prepared for being judged on walks and people crossing over the road but the same people 'Ahhh' over the snarling Chihuahua.

Staffs are beautiful dogs recommended dog breed with children..loving funny loyal the list is endless.
