Can someone help me with puppy vaccinations please?

I have been having chats with our breeder about vaccinations and I'm still a bit confused.

Puppy will come to us unvaccinated as the breeder doesn't like to vaccinate her dogs until they are 16 weeks. She said the puppy will only need one vaccine if I wait.

I need to look into this properly before deciding what to do but does anyone know anything about this? Or have any useful links for me to read?

OP yes just think it turned into a vaccination protocol discussion but glad you came to a descison you are happy with. Good luck with your new puppy Smile

Sorry Lion, glad you're all sorted now. Good luck with your new pup.

Glad you have made a decision you are happy with. I think I had as much or more angst about vaccinating my pup as my kids! To throw a spanner in the works you may wish to check which Lepto vaccination your vet uses. There are a lot of people who won't use Lepto 4. I believe it protects against more Lepto strains BUT some dogs have been made very ill.

Once you've seen a tiny puppy die of parvo you vaccinate. I've seen 5 this year and it's only march. The disease itself is utterly horrendous and so preventable. I couldn't forgive myself if my dog did get it and I could have vaccinated against it.

I wouldn't wait until 16 weeks to socialise but would take sensible precautions in the mean time.

Good luck with your puppy op

I don't mind titre testing in adult dogs but in puppies it's not worth the risk.

Having a puppy not be vaccinated died 3 days after bringing her home. Breeder did not vaccinate. Told me she was 8 weeks but was 6 weeks. On the way home we allowed her to poop and pee on a patch of grass as we traveled from Utah to Arizona as I live in AZ and she in Utah. Puppy developed distemper and died 3 days later. Vaccines are important a 6 weeks. You cant trust the mothers immunities in the puppies. Now I do not believe in any boosters. Including Rabies. As they have done stidies 7 years later from the first shot only and the immunity was still there. But unfortunately the law says every 3 years. And kennels will not allow dog without a yearly booster. Which is why I dont use kennels. But puppies must be vaccinated early.

Also talk to your vet about vacs for life. We have both ours with Pets at home and I paid £99 and £69 I think for ours and they're paid up for life now, vacs and a check up every year.

@Tamberlane @3boys3dogshelp
Hi there, I wondered if I could ask your advice?
I have two Maltese terriers both 6 yo. I am about to get a Golden Retriever who will have been vaccinated at 8 wks. Last year I forgot the Malteses boosters-just totally forgot them but up until this mistake they have had a booster every year. This year I changed Vet and they picked this up and said I was putting the new puppy at huge risk as my Maltese are not protected. Obviously I’m worried I’m going to harm the new puppy. Will my Maltese have any protection/immunity and am I risking the puppies life?

@Josephine1564

I am not a vet and this is a zombie thread so its unlikely the previous posters will return, but I would assume because you had vaccinated the Maltese previously, and only missed one set, he/she will still carry the protection needed.
Also, your GR is going to be vaccinated.

Its is very very very very very unlikely your puppy will become ill because of this, and it is odd the vets made such a big thing out of it.
