What do you do about flea and worm treatments?

I'm debating joining a pet care plan at my vet's. Around £30 a month for flea and worm control, annual healthcheck and booster vaccination, kennel cough booster, and a six month healthcheck.

It seems expensive to me. However I don't trust the treatments available in shops to be effective or safe. Also not convinced he needs the boosters.

What do you pay?

I give mine treatments routinely , he's never had any signs of fleas or worms - he gets Bravecto every 3 months and Milbemax monthly , we used to be on our vets scheme (£15 per month) but that was for advocate and drontal and i needed to add in tick cover so it was easier to use my current regime .

Japan, maybe you will be able to help me understand a few things about worming? I could have got this all wrong as I have just been using google so bear with me. I have wormed pup as was recommended up to 6 months with Milibax but the last time I gave it to her she had a severe gastrointestinal reaction. I understand that this was important to kill the possibility toxocara infection.
As I understand it all wormers treat rather than prevent worms and that only a few wormers treat lungworm (panacure?). I am in the far south west and there is a risk of lungworm (30 cases within 50 miles according to the website) but my vets initial recommendation for my pup was nexguard and milibax neither of which will treat of prevent lungworm, I could be wrong about this its just what I have read. I do understand that Advocate will treat lungworm as well as fleas but this wasn't suggested for us, I think because the vet considers tics to be a higher risk. If I do a regular worm count it will check for lungworm too, I can then use the appropriate treatment should there be an infestation rather than giving my pup treatment for something she may or may not have.

Ooooo I never knew about that website, 189 cases of lungworms within 50 miles :(

Floralnomad · 01/03/2017 10:14

I'm just an owner but I was told that Milbemax / milpro given on a 4 weekly basis does cover lungworm prevention .

Floralnomad · 01/03/2017 10:18

Just looked on the map and there's been 1158 cases within 50 miles of me , so if any of you live in the SE I would say we are in a very high risk area .

Milbemax is used as a preventative for lungworm.
Nexgard and milbemax monthly covers pretty much everything-ticks fleas, lungworm and all the intestinal worms.

Fecal testing is also an option but I'd really err on the side of caution with lungworm depending on where you live. Its spreading like wildfire through the bottom of the uk in particular!

Thanks Tamber, unfortunately after last weeks episode post Milbemax pup will not be having that again Envy

I wish mine would be more careful in what he eats, found him running around with a snail in his mouth the other day. The only problem I have with advocate is it makes my dog quite hyper. I put it on him at night but then he doesn't sleep so going to try first thing in the morning instead.
