We bought a dog 8 months ago where we have tried to train him.... he doesn't listen he still nips and snaps and it's now getting to the point where he is jumping up and going for my toddler and you can hear his jaw snap ! It's scaring me as I can't leave them in the room together he does it to me and my bf he tries to bite his ankles and he's the master so it's in heard of isn't it ? He knows not to go on the couch yet still runs in covered in mud and going on there he's not allowed up stairs but as soon as back is turned he's up there.... we've always told him no and made sure he knows and he does get praised when he's good (which is never ) he chews everything up in site and will just take food of the side and out of my boys hand, I'm currently pregnant and it's getting me so anxious ! He goes on walks everyday so he's excersised a lot. He doesn't listen to me whatso ever and when I play with him he gets aggressive to the point it scares me. Any advice would be helpful ? No nastiness please I'm at by whits end

OP decide whether you want to put the time and energy into training OR whether you want to rehome.

Once you have decided that then as suggested by someone earlier start a new thread and ask for advice on what to do for the best.

I agree berating the op achieves nothing other than perhaps making the OP run away and not get any advice on how to move forward in the best way.

He doesn't have a good home or you would have started training before he hit the teens.
I ask again. How much exercise?
You have a high energy teenage dog who seems bored. It's not trained. That's the issue. Not the dog.
If he had properly bitten your child your child would have sustained serious and possibly life changing injuries.
Seek professional help from a behaviourist or a good (new) home for this pet.

She said two long walks a day. I agree dogs can get bored, however plenty of dog's have days where they don't get long walks and don't resort to biting.

Fwiw I have never attended a dog training class in my life and don't intend to. It is possible to train your dogs at home yourself. It's what people have done for years.

Spot on Wolfie

Grewsap What is "with" some posters is the sheer fucking frustration of yet another innocent dog not having its needs met (and proper training is a need) meaning it'll probably be out on its ear looking for a new home with the label of being difficult and not good with children just because yet another owner hasn't taken full and proper responsibility.

Volunteer in a dog rescue for a bit and see how you feel then.

he knows right from wrong yet chooses not to listen

You are anthropomorphising him. He isn't a human. He doesn't know right from wrong and just choosing to ignore. He knows what behaviours end in a reward for him. And a reward for him can be anything from getting to smell the nice smell on the couch or getting attention from you by being shouted at. He will keep doing the things that are rewarding for him. Dogs are highly intelligent and can learn basic manners when taught properly with consistency. It's the humans in charge of them that need the training.

You've been "looking into classes" that's really helpful. You've had him plenty of time to alrewdy have been to many classes. Poor excuse.if you'd been he wouldn't be like you describe. You says he's " never good" poor thing, that's down to you.

A good home is one that trains and has patience. You're trying " get rid" of him, so no not good home or owner. I don't care if you think I'm rude. You couldn't possibly think as badly of me as I do of you and people like you that treat animals as disposable items.

The fact you have a young child and another one on the way is what makes you irresponsible when it comes to getting him.

As someone who works in rescue, has dogs and other animals and has NEVER rehomed any of my animals AND lived all over the world and taken them ALL with us, I feel very equipped to judge you.

I'm with you Grewsap. I would rather eat my own shoes than go to a dog training class.

OP, please stop trying to figure out the whys and wherefores just now and figure out if you want to keep or get rid. That's all you need to decide tonight. Tomorrow act on the decision.

All the thread is doing is clouding your thoughts and making you feel like shit.

God some of these posts are absolutely horrible. Good luck with the dogs because you sure as hell aren't going to have many meaningful human relationships with such patronising, judgey, intransigent attitudes!

And op, it's perfectly possible to be a great dog owner but admit that you've failed with one, whoevers 'fault' it is. Ignore these nutters.

The dog is going to have to go

He isn't safe around children that much is obvious

But..and I say this kindly, you haven't trained him properly either.

He doesn't know right from wrong. He's a dog not a child. He needs to go somewhere where he will get intensive training and a complete behaviour overall

Something that is going to take time and dedication.

Doesn't sound like a naughty dog - just a puppy who hasn't had proper training. He shouldn't be weeing in his crate at 10 months. What have you done to train him to go outside? Take him to weekly professional classes and have someone come to the house each day for a couple of weeks for one to one training and corrections. How far is he walked each day?

Wolfiefan · 06/02/2017 17:40

A bite bleeds. I have a 20 week puppy. She mouthes. Sometimes it fucking hurts but she's NOT biting me. There's a difference. There really is.
You telling your dog off is not training. I am attending classes and doing HW. Trying to do clicker training. If my dog doesn't listen it's because I have bored her, not provided a reward or incentive, she doesn't understand or I haven't done my HW. She's not naughty.
Long walks. How long? Off lead?
I'm still betting a bored, underexercised and untrained teen dog.

What does your DP say about rehoming the dog?

He has bitten your son twice you have a newborn on the way the dog shouldn't be anywhere near any children. Please give the dog to a rescue center and tell them what he has done. He is young enough to be re-homed don't wait till he attacks your children
