Should I get a greyhound?

There's a greyhound thread a few years old which I've read and found very helpful. But there's still a few questions I'd really like help with.

We've been thinking about a dog for a while but couldn't decide / settle on the right breed.

Then a couple of weeks ago we met a beautiful greyhound. He was so calm and peaceful and friendly and tolerant I totally fell in love!! And then I find out they don't need hours of exercise - bonus!!!!!

But we do have 2 DCs, 7 & 5. We have a piano and a drum kit and generally sometimes they want to make quite a bit of noise.

Am I kidding myself? Are we just totally unsuited to have a greyhound?

Is it true they all need quiet homes?

Can they be trained to get used to kiddy noise?

Can they be taught to play?

Will they go to chase when on the lead and pull me over?

Where is the best place to buy pretty greyhounds coat? Wink

How lovely, what are they CMOT? I saw the two little greyhounds you recently fostered on another thread, they were just adorable.

Phillpot12 · 20/01/2017 17:54

What are the foster pups like CMOTDibbler......the others were gorgeous!?!

Just before I head off to MeggieMoo I just wanted to add That my dog behaviourist friend told me to sleep with my new rescue dog to start with.
I didn't want him upstairs so I sleep on the sofa for a few days, I then moved into the dining room and he stayed in the playroom, before making it upstairs. It took 5 days in total, do not leave him to cry in the way that's often recommended for puppies.
I freely admit that he now sleeps upstairs in the room next door to ours - less overnight scavenging that way and he's not a smelly dog.
Good luck!!

CMOTDibbler · 20/01/2017 18:16

Two dear little caramel lurchers with big brown eyes - a bit thin and very smelly, so it's baths tomorrow!

AlreadyGone · 20/01/2017 18:48

I've ordered Greyhounds for Dummies and Dog Training for Dummies both arriving tomorrow. The utility room is all cleared and his cupboard filled with new toys.

I'm feeling more excited than anxious now. These adorable photos are definitely helping!!

I was wondering what to do if/when he starts crying at night. I didn't do sleep training / controlled crying with my babies and that didn't end well. The 4yo is yet to sleep through. Hmm

I'm excited for you op 😀
And on everyone's recommendations here I'm on meggiemoo looking for our next matching set 😀

Mine never cried at night, the first night my DH took her out at 10pm for the last wee and we had to wake her at 7. Same now, she never makes a fuss over night, we really couldn't ask for more. The only time we hear her fidgeting is when she's cold and DH has forgotten to put her fleece on! So he goes down and wraps her up then she's back snoring away.

So hopefully you'll be in luck! I have no advice for if she does cry at night, I'd be hopeless!

Actually I'm wondering whether DH slept down with her the first few nights, I can't remember. Maybe he did.

I'll just have to keep repeating to myself I am not co-sleeping with a dog. I am not co-sleeping with a dog!

I look forward to seeing pictures of the little lurchers CMOT, they sound very cute, if a bit smelly! Hope your first night goes smoothly.

Here's our Meggie moo drawer 😄

AlreadyGone · 20/01/2017 19:58

Wow! That is an impressive collection. Does it take you long to get your DHound ready to go out? Or do you quickly co-ordinate with your own outfit?

Lovely selection HaHa. We have the running hound one in blue, though it doesn't really suit either dog who look better in brighter colours.

We have collars for best (sighthound meetings, rescue coffee mornings, dog shows), messy play plain webbing ones (the river, super muddy woods, the place with the disgusting pond), and then dh and I both have our favourites from there on for everyday. Same with leads, though dh is fussy and doesn't like the velvet lead. Fortunatly, ddog1 is the only one that wears a coat outside and he just has a choice of two normally - a starry raincoat and a red quilted, so no difficult decisions there!

hahahaIdontgetit · 20/01/2017 20:47

4 hounds here, and I like them all co-ordinated, luckily Meggie Moo is very accommodating, so we have 4 tartans for next weeks burns night, 4 Christmas collars, 4 running hounds, etc etc etc.

Just looking at the pansies, tulips and daffodils for spring collars.

hahahaIdontgetit · 20/01/2017 20:48

Just changing them into strawberry thief collars tonight, they all look amazing 😘

CMOTDibbler · 20/01/2017 21:02

Burns night collars ! Grin I am in awe of your seasonal collar changing and co-ordination levels!

PacificDogwod · 20/01/2017 21:48

I co-slept on the cold and hard kitchen floor in a sleeping bag the first night... Blush
He's been fine since.

Wow! Those collars, hahaha!

I think our DHound is neglected - he's got one....

hahahaIdontgetit · 20/01/2017 21:50

It wouldn't occur to me to change the curtains, but the dogs have memory foam mattresses and gorgeous collars.

The kids are jealous Wink

hahahaIdontgetit · 20/01/2017 21:53

Strawberry thief collars

Should I get a greyhound?
PacificDogwod · 20/01/2017 21:56

Yep, memory foam mattress here too Grin

hahahaIdontgetit · 20/01/2017 22:01

Veryon is gorgeous!

Scuttlebutter · 20/01/2017 23:30

When we knew we were adopting our most recent boy, the very first email I sent was to Meggie Moo Blush - she knew before anyone else and we had a wonderful discussion about Jack's starter collars (a Christmas one and his current one featuring cherry blossom). Like others, I'll be thinking about spring/Easter soon!

Pic attached is of him wearing his Christmas collar and lead and his first fleece.

Should I get a greyhound?
SleightOfMind · 21/01/2017 13:38

Veryon looks gorgeous! Lucky you!
Don't worry if it feels a bit overwhelming at first, just try and take everything gently and calmly and things will fall into place.
If you know someone with a calm friendly dog it might be an idea to ask if you can go for a walk together.
He'll take his cue about anything worrying - traffic, loud noises or other breeds - from you and the other dog which can be really helpful.

Have fun & more pix pls!!
