was just cruising through Gumtree for chest of drawers when up came this dog. Poor boy. A year old. I can't bear the fact that he was posing for a photo... his rehoming photo Sad . Sadly I can't take him as I already have a big dog, but...

We got our dog from a family who needed to rehome her, via a mutual acquaintance, we paid £400 and she's worth every penny, we love her to bits.

In regards to the price I used to help with a rescue and the advice was to sell for a price to deter dog baiters.

I think it is unfair to judge them. When we got our dog I had worked at home for a solid company for five years and was married. I'm now divorced and a single Mum and If our company had gone under last year when it was looking wobbly I would have been faced with any job I could get, probably low income and daycare for the dog of at least £100 a week which would have been an utter nightmare. I would have tried but we would have gone under.

As it is I now have arthritis in my 30s and can barely walk some days which brings its own problems. 😞

Trusty - I agree with that. New owners were found through word of mouth and were neighbors of friends of friends luckily - there was no mention of a price but I used words of the effect that I would be selling him (so they assumed they would have to pay) But I didn't have any intention of actually taking money once I found the right people.

We have a gumtree rescue as well. She's a purebred large breed. The family fell on hard times and had to downsize their house. They lied about how old she was but they were desperate so I understand. We took her under the premise that if it didn't work out we would surrender her to the breed rescue and pay the fees. Happily she has been with us for years now. We kept in touch with her old family for the first few years until they mentioned having gotten another dog! I think they understood that I wasn't terribly impressed and we haven't heard from them since.

Personally I'm judging because with both my rescue and my privately bought dogs I had to sign contracts stating that if j had to rehome them they must be returned to either the rescue or the breeder respectively. If this lab's breeder isn't aware as I suspect then they're trying to recoup money in my eyes not trying to do the best thing for the dog.

What about this poor chap? 10yrs old and finding himself homeless

www.gumtree.com/p/dogs/springer-spaniel-k.c-/1209408389

My own dog is rising 11, and the thought of the heartache and confusion he would go through if he had to move house, let alone new owners (he's not going anywhere) doesn't bare thinking about.

I know people's situations change, but surely life should be adapted around the dog? That's what I had to do when mine was 18mths old, no way was I rehoming him.

I think she's a girl, not a chap Smile. They've included the name and address of the breeder in their pics - surely the breeder would take her back?

I looked at that ad about the springer and he's put the breeders details on so I've left a message for the breeder about her poor old girl. Hopefully she'll go back to him rather than god knows where Sad

Our girl is a Gumtree dog. The lady advertising her had put £100 price on to deter dog baiting people. Nevertheless, she had numerous calls asking if the price was negotiable or if they could have the dog for free, as they could give her a home today.

When I rang she was very wary, which I thought was strange until we got chatting and she told me all about these calls. The next day we went to meet her and the dog, and she said how lovely it was for someone not to ask about the money. It was only £100, we weren't going to quibble!

Anyway, she only had the dog on there because she had removed the dog from an abusive household, but couldn't keep her herself as her son was very allergic (rashes in his face etc). Gumtree worked for her and our lovely dog!

I found one over new year that was a 10wk old mini schnauzer. Apparently an Xmas present for child scared of dogs. Child was still scared so rehoming after a fortnight for £600. I did message them and suggest that contacted the breeder but unsurprisingly heard nothing back.

From the other suggested ads Gumtree shows me, it looks like the springer's owner is also offering a German shepherd AND some cross breed pups for sale . . .

Hoppinggreen · 12/01/2017 16:41

I belong to a breed rescue group and if people spot one on Gumtree they usually contact and offer to take it and then regime appropriately after a foster assessment.
Perhaps you could contact a Labrador rescue and give them the link?

That's an idea. I'm still thinking about that poor dog.

DD(15) is long term sick (CFS/ME) and a huge animal lover. I've been thinking about advertising on Borrow my doggy for a dog to come and keep her company during the day. So I clicked on this thread out of interest.

Imagine my surprise to see that the dog in the OP is exactly where I live!! Shock

We really cannot get a dog though. It wouldn't be fair on it when DD is better and back at school. Also a dog that age would need more exercise that DD would be able to give it during the day.

Instead I will share it on my Facebook page.

I have a dog ad on gumtree. . And it's a bloody nightmare. I am fostering a gorgeous lurcher /collie cross. Bad home life previously and all stated in ad. Have put £50 to avoid the oddballs I have had messaging - it's to cover jabs I will take him for before he goes. Ad states no other pet but had 4 people who have dogs in immediate family, a woman who didn't know yesterday was Thurs. And a woman who expected to collect and drop him at her alcoholic df house but bring him back next day if he didn't like him!!
Photo to appeal to the hearts of mners out there!! All shelters are full and I am in touch with several fosterers /rehoming places but no luck.

So many of the gumtree ads are making me Hmm now I've read this. From the lab that came from a rescue centre 2 days ago and is now for sale for £250 to the 8 week puppy who the seller's son is allergic to, yet she's also selling puppies from her own litter.

Is this even allowed? I want to rescue these pups Sad

I'm not judging the owners for needing to rehome, of course circumstances can change and it could be breaking the owners heart BUT asking for £450 is what makes me judge.

I understand the premise behind breeders demanding the dog back if you need to rehome him, but it doesn't sit right with me that they basically want the dog back for free, when they will then rehome him again for a fee.

I shared the ad and my dsis has asked if I know the seller as they are looking for a young dog, but not a puppy that they have to train. So she's going to speak to her DH about it.

Obvs all my friends are now saying to her that she has to get him now, poor little doggy, look at his little face etc. Grin

I'll update if anything comes from it.

I don't really get the outrage. You don't know what other people's circumstances are; they may well have very legitimate reasons for needing to up their hours.

What would you prefer? For them to just leave it in alone all day because they love it? Or try and find it another home?

I judge, I'm afraid. Not for giving the dog up when they are no longer able to care for it, but for having got the dog in the first place. They should have thought long and hard, considered all possible eventualities for the future, researched their choice of breed. Totally unavoidable and unforseeable circumstances are very rare.

I would have loved a dog in my 20s. I worked from home mostly too, so I could easily have gone and got one. But I was in the early days of my career back then and knew that changing jobs or landlord was always a possibility. My personal life wasn't exactly stable either back then. So guess what? I waited. I waited for 10 years until I was in a position where I knew with 100% certainty that I could offer a dog a loving home for life. Why does that not seem to be an option for some people?

He's lovely. I am thinking about it because I live close enough to pop around and meet him (10 miles away), but £450 is excessive - especially if he hasn't yet been neutered and I have to pay for that....plus do I really want another dog right now [ponders aloud]
