Dog walk in rain

Empress13 · 02/01/2017 11:06

Given that yesterday was awful with the rain all day my dog did not want to go out as he hates the rain with a passion! So I'm ashamed to say had one walk yesterday which was late afternoon ! Do all of you walk your dogs in the rain come what may?

I have 2 working Cocker spaniels. You would expect them to want to go out no matter what the weather is. Only 1 will venture outside if it's cold or wet. The other has to be forced outside.

I still take the 1 out even if the other one isn't interested.

We had friends with a GS that loved the rain, would sit outside in and refuse to come in Confused

Mine also dodges puddles/mud basically unless she is very very hot from lots of ball chasing and then she will lay in the stream - rest of the time she gingerly uses the stepping stones refusing to get her feet wet!

GinIsIn · 02/01/2017 21:31

MaxwellDog won't leave the house at all if it rains. If she can't hold it any longer, she will ask to go for a walk, walk about a metre from the door, pee by the tree just outside and then dash back in again and sulk for at least an hour!

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 02/01/2017 22:53

The only weather my dog isn't keen on is extreme heat - everything else, rain, wind, hail, snow, he's saying 'bring it on!' Grin. But then he is throwing himself into freezing water every day with a huge grin on his face so I think it's safe to say being cold and wet doesn't bother him...

I have fabulous wellies (Aigle) and a sea salt waterproof coat and we just get out there

mimiasovitch · 03/01/2017 09:42

I think the rain is my Spinone's favourite weather. Which is good as, well, Wales Grin. Unfortunately it means the woods where I walk her are incredibly muddy right now, and it makes the post walk clean up a bit of a palaver. I'm heading to the beach this morning just to save myself (and my sofas).

JigglyTuff · 03/01/2017 09:52

My dog isn't even keen on cold weather (even wearing a coat) and rain is a total no no - he hides under the dining room table when I'm trying to put his harness on. He won't even go for a wee unless I coax him out into the back garden

He's a total wimp

Eolian · 03/01/2017 09:59

Yes, 2 walks a day whatever the weather - partly because ddog is a large and energetic breed, partly because we live in Cumbria, so if we didn't walk in the rain we wouldn't walk very often. Grin

Eolian · 03/01/2017 10:01

Oh and ddog doesn't like going in the garden for a wee when it's pouring but us quite happy to go for a long walk Hmm .

ChocolateRaisin · 03/01/2017 10:16

My little jrt x has to be turfed out into the garden to do her business when it is raining and absolutely hates the rain. If it is raining and cold she is pretty much impossible to walk as she just tries to turn home all the time. If it is warm and rainy she isn't quite as bad but still not overjoyed.

My GSD pup is fine in 'normal' rain but if it chucks it down he is not at all happy either and tries to hide behind my legs for shelter. I took him out the other day in a break from the torrential stuff when it was just normal rain for a whiz round the park with his ball which he loved. The little one would have refused to get out of the car if I'd tried to take her.

RandomMess · 07/01/2017 21:09

We have reached a new level in Princessness

Stopped of at one of ddog favourite places on the way past in the car. Instead of bounding around and running like crazy it was very subdued, turns out it was too damp and muddy underfoot to leave the proper tarmac roads Shock

TheMortificadosDragon · 08/01/2017 09:42

My dog has fantastic bladder control on a rainy morning. Sometimes I have to watch him to make sure he doesn't dash out, do a pretend squat and then dash in again and then do a lot of exaggerated shaking. When I chuck him back out, he goes under the garden table, while staring back at me resentfully.

BestIsWest · 08/01/2017 09:45

Ours is reluctant to go out into the garden if it's raining but would never turn down the opportunity for a walk.

InfiniteSheldon · 08/01/2017 09:49

My dog refused to leave the house at all on Friday he usually comes to work with me but the slight chill in the air he sensed from the open front door sent him scuttling back to bed. He is a jrt/chihuahua cross those and a very very special snowflake dh calls him Little Lord Farquar. If I make him go out I end up carrying him as he hides under every bush and begs passing strangers to pick him up.

Chunder · 08/01/2017 18:03

Mine hate the rain in winter (but not bothered in summer). So if we don't go out we just play indoors and do some training to keep their brains engaged. If you have a big enough space/small dog then a flirt pole is great fun. Mine also love a game of chase the hooman around the kitchen, treasure hunts (hide treats in various places and also inside empty toilet rolls) and tug of war.

CrazyGreyhoundLady · 08/01/2017 18:15

I have greyhounds, in the cold with their fleece coats and waterproof overs on then I can forcefully drag them out to go to the toilet in the rain. Sometimes I even manage to get ten minutes up the road before I give up dragging them as they stand still whining and staring back towards the house. Hmm

StandardPoodle · 09/01/2017 16:33

Noitsnot I discovered Aigle wellies a year ago - fantastic especially for cold wet winter mornings. Rescue girl started wearing a coat when she was 10 but still does the pre-breakfast walk whatever the weather, The poodle insists on at least 2 good walks a day whether it's pouring with rain, snowing or sun shining and isn't even bothered if it's not really light yet.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 09/01/2017 16:43

We are not fair weather dog owners we have a fair weather dog. I have tried to drag her out cartoon style while she is sitting down digging her feet in while it's been raining. She loves pottering in the garden too but if I open the door for her and it's raining she looks up at me like it's my fault and traipses off to find somewhere cosy to sit.
She will occasionally go out if she has her waterproof on with the collar pulled up to her ears. I'm considering getting her one with a hood.

pigsDOfly · 11/01/2017 13:27

Mine doesn't mind it if the rain is light, but gets a bit freaked out by heavy rain - I'm happy either way and quite like walking in the rain.

However, if I put a coat on her she gets very angry, barks at other dogs and people - something she never normally does - and if she's really cross will refuse to move.

I read somewhere that putting a coat on a dog can affect how other dogs read their body language. With her double coat she looks a lot bigger than she actually is and the coat, fitting against her body, makes her look a lot smaller. Maybe she knows the coat makes her look smaller, I doubt it somehow, but with dogs you never know :)
