I have 4 dogs. St Bernard's anybody? Any experience? Or any other suggestions. Sell your dog breed to me! Crosses welcome as are photos.

Rottweiler, she is lazy and disobedient. Stubborn and does try (and succeed) to lay on everyone's lap and lick them to death.
She is the worst guard dog known to man and actually hides until she knows who is here.
However she is amazing with my girls and would defend them with her life. She will not tolerate violence of any type and will even try to stop any play fights by getting in between.
My girls love her. She has helped both of them learn to walk and prevented many falls.
However she eats me out of house and home and out of dummies.
Also hates when I put the kids shoes on... not sure why lol.

BadToTheBone · 17/12/2016 19:03

Andshesgone I'm a Scottie lover too, I've had two and I've adored both so much, sadly I'm dogless at the moment due to circumstances but I'd really love another. All your good and bad points made me nod and smile. Those big eyes just floor me, beautiful!

I meant to post a picture before. Here is our old girl.

Love this thread. I'm hugely dog broody at the mo but right now I don't have the time so I'm making do with stealing walking a couple of dogs for friends. We're hoping to get our own in a couple of years once life has settled down a bit (young DCs and a probable house move).

Please keep the posts and photos coming!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/12/2016 20:03

Oh they are all so beautiful. I'm getting so broody!
DP and I would love a dog but our working hours are ridiculous and we'd end up paying someone to walk a dog during the day so we'll wait. Although there's already a theoretical tussle about who would do the 'early shift ( my partner is not an early riser)
My dad had a smooth fox terrier and I've been smitten by the breed ever since - although they are ungovernable killing machines.

MothershipG · 17/12/2016 20:33

Affenpinschers here.

Probably not your thing OP as they are small but I think that they are fantastic little dogs and honestly don't get why they are not more popular.

Small, scruffy and black so don't show the dirt or need loads of grooming.
Very affectionate to their people but often standoffish with strangers.
Perfect size for lap/bed warming.
Can walk for miles but equally satisfied by trip to the local park.
Very attached so recall not a problem.
Trainable, I did agility with one of mine and know of a few others that do.

Biggest con is probably their fondness for the sound of their own voice. They were bred to keep down domestic vermin and be an early warning system, they take this job very seriously Grin
Not great with toddlers as they are small but fine with older gentle children.
They don't see the point of going outside to wee and poo but do it to please us, so house training takes a while.

The dog with the glowing demon eyes is my Mini Schnauzer.

Millymollymanatee · 17/12/2016 20:40

I have a small labradoodle. She is very loving, very intelligent, good with kids, low shedding, barks when the doorbell rings, but doesn't bark very often apart from that. She loves her basket and spends a lot of time there snoozing. She's great at playing fetch and she's easy to wear out on the park. I absolutely adore her, more than DH, lol.

lovelycats · 17/12/2016 20:45

carneddai Yes deerhounds are very sweet too. Greengrass's dog in Heartbeat was a deerhound I'm sure, loved him Grin

setter your puppy is beautiful.

Wolfiefan · 17/12/2016 20:47

Bell
Have you thought of volunteering for the cinnamon trust? You could get your doggy fix and help an elderly or unwell dog owner keep their loved pet.

Lancelottie · 17/12/2016 22:57

Mothership, are you sure those are dogs and not a couple of stray ewoks?

AndShesGone · 17/12/2016 23:36

badtothebone - oh god the intelligent and curious eyes. So soulful (and mischievous cos she's only 19 weeks). Her crazy moments when she hares around the house shaking a toy make me laugh so much.

Get another as soon as you can Grin

TheMortificadosDragon · 17/12/2016 23:45

Lovelycats - Greengrass's dog Alfred was a lurcher, probably Bedlington/grey. Not quite as big as a deerhound, I think. I've met a pair of those a couple of times on a nearby walk, they are gorgeous!

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 18/12/2016 00:06

GSD...my two are opposite ends of the shepherd scale.

one is bright, independent, outgoing, confident, nosey, likes to supervise and know all the things, knows best, very dignified, gentle, loves the children....gets a bit blue when they are away and is thrilled when they return home....he's less sulky than he used to be if they are not here as they are all more or less away from home.

the other is very much a one woman dog, needy, watchful, pines and goes off his food, worries...but he is also very bright, eager as hell to please (me, if not anyone else), loves to nurse people....it's the only time he is "in charge"

They are both MASSIVE....45k+ very tall, hairy as hell, and Zac is long haired...I have dust bunnies bigger than most of the dogs pictured on here ;)
If I can get my phone to cooperate I'll post a picture separately.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 18/12/2016 00:09

Here they are,hopefully

mortificados Oh dear. I stand corrected Grin He was a very cute wee beastie anyway!

iloveeverykindofcat · 18/12/2016 07:30

Seneca: They wouldn't be my breed of choice, I'd have something more easy-going and possibly a bit less intelligent. But my mother always says she 'likes a dog with character' and they certainly have that in spades.

iloveeverykindofcat · 18/12/2016 07:33

Dewi in his old age. He made 16 before he was PTS due to cancer. A legend, really a wonderful dog. His main vice was barking.

Wolfie the Cinnamon Trust is ace, isn't it? My friend walks dogs for a couple of people through them. Unfortunately there are none in my area at the mo! I do keep checking. Another friend has just got a Wolfhound X puppy. She is adorable with enormous paws. I'm not jealous at all

bluetongue · 18/12/2016 08:12

So many lovely dogs here.

I'm hoping to get a whippet next year. Was considering a greyhound but the smaller size of a whippet suits me better. Still love the ex racing hounds though Smile

Wolfiefan · 18/12/2016 08:16

Bell if you are going on the map on their website then don't! Contact them directly. They only put the most urgent cases on there. Good luck.

iloveeverykindofcat · 18/12/2016 08:23

Yes lovelycats alarm system is best way to describe it. And you are quite right, they would never harm anyone, just like to make a heck of a noise. My one is the worst. Barks like nothing else, than hides behind me when the door is actually opened.

Lovely thread, I have really enjoyed seeing all your wonderful dogs and learning all about them.
