How far does your staffie walk?

New foster staffie Stanley Smile.

Never had a staffie before. Stanley (who is 10 months old). Doesn't seem keen on walking more than a few miles. I'm sure some of his lack of stamina is due to being such in kennels for the past few weeks (and good knows where he was before that) but wondering if this is a general staffie thing? Do they usually prefer short bursts of exercise? Any top tips for tiring him out/calming him down without long walks?

I'd also love to hear success stories of house training rescue staffies. We're taking him out loads and doing all the positive reinforcement stuff and he is making progress but I can't wait for him to properly "get it" !

And before anyone says it, yes, I can raise all this with the rescue but don't want to call them early on a Sunday morning (plus I am currently trapped under a sleeping staff and bored Grin)

I did a wonderful homecheck for a Staffie not much older than yours a few months back (he was in the care of a sighthound charity - don't ask!) and I've stayed friends with his new adopter. He's loving regular, long walks of up to 10 miles now, has started basic obedience classes and is learning agility with a view to starting competing next year (his new home is keen on agility with their existing adorably bonkers terrierist). Provided you gradually increase distance and improve fitness, they can manage very well on this level of exercise and they are really bright, so will enjoy plenty of mental stimulation such as training in different sports. There's a very well known judge in Obedience/Rally who has done amazing things with her Staffies - top levels in Obedience and Rally, but also things like Field Trials and scentwork. She is full of praise for their amazing brains.

Training and games are way more important for tiring them out than mileage.

Also he's young still, you'll need to build up his walks gradually.

Thanks both.

Scuttlebutter that is really encouraging Smile

DDog3 is part Staffie part whippet and can cheerfully outdo my working spaniels Grin
She has recently started agility and was really good at it. We've sadly had to break for the winter as indoor training is too manic for her and it's just too cold outdoors for her whippet sensibilities but we'll definitely be back in the spring Smile
