Shit, I broke the dog!

Long story short, dog in garden with me, jumped on rabbit run, I told him to get down. He did. Minus a paw.
One of his claws got caught in the wire and as he pulled his paw away, one of his claws was ripped out. Dear god, he screamed!
Much blood, quivering and big eyes later, I;ve wrapped it with a melonin pad and bandage.
Do we take him to vet (I think it wise for prohibitive antibiotics) and will his claw grow back?
We found the claw in the garden-its ripped out from the root and must be bloody sore!!
The bugger is guilt tripping me by giving me his poorly paw!

Oww fuck, poor dog. I don't know that theres much the vet can do apart from issue painkillers and possibly antibiotics, but I'd probably take the dog anyway to check its all ok for healing properly.

Def need the vet , will probably need ABs and maybe dressing , claw should grow back unless it's damaged the nail bed too badly . My dog has had lots of nail problems as he has SLO so lots of experience in this area unfortunately .

Take him to the vet but I think they grow back. One of mine had her dew claw out as it had growth under it and its back now. The other had his split low down in the quick on a walk and it grew back (lot of blood too) but maybe both had enough quick to rejuvenate? Not sure. The latter I didn't take to the vet in the end as the blood had eased up by the time we got home and it healed itself well after a clean up. Former obviously was stocked and wrapped by the vet.

The nail should grow back just fine although sometimes if the nail bed itself has been damaged they may grow back wonky or occasionally not at all.

It's definitely worth a trip to vet, they might want to give pre-emptive antibiotics and dress it as it's very easy for them to become infected.

Catzpyjamas · 11/12/2016 00:30

Please take him to the vet tonight, especially if it is still bleeding. They can dress it properly, cauterise any bleeding and give him pain relief and antibiotics if required. Your own practice will have an out of hours service. If he's insured, it should be covered.

BlackDoglet · 11/12/2016 00:30

Vets definitely. If infection gets in, poor bugger could lose his foot.

Evilstepmum01 · 11/12/2016 00:52

Yeah, vets on monday! they do have an out of hours service but its stopped bleeding and is well bandaged. I'm well experienced with paws so the bandage is good. I'll change it tomorrow and bathe in salty water.
I think anti-b's are a plan, if he gets an infection in his nail bed, he may lose a toe.
We had to have his dews off when he was 1 as he kept catching and tearing them.
Sadly no metacam in house since our old dog died but he seems comfortable and stopped shrieking!
Now, how to keep a hyper 3 legged dog from licking his 'no-chew' bandage! Hmm

My vet told me that my dog could have paracetamol , I'm pretty sure he said 130 mg for my 13 kg dog , might be worth asking your vet for future emergencies .
