He's coming come on Friday and we're so excited. He's 3 years old, an ex racer and so beautiful, I love him already. We've researched the breed and are planning on buying a bed, coat and tag (he comes with a collar and lead and 6 weeks insurance). We think we'll transition to a raw diet but will do the mix he's used to to start.

Anyone else got one? Anything we've forgotten?! I'm stupidly excited!

Ahhh! Gorgeous Grin

GreenieGables · 11/12/2016 19:59

Ah how lovely, and what a gorgeous looking fella.

We have had our greyhound for 6 weeks now and she has settled in nicely. The first weekend was a bit hard in a 'what have we done' kind of way and the DC were a bit overwhelmed. But that's all forgotten now and we're starting to enjoy having her.

I keep looking at others to adopt, they seem a little addictive.

Good luck, exciting times ahead.

GreenieGables · 11/12/2016 20:02

This is her having a good roll around Grin

carpedonut · 11/12/2016 21:04

Oh they are addictive aren't they?

I'm eyeing up my ridiculous mongrels wondering if we could squeeze in a long leg.

I have a lurcher rather than a pure greyhound and he is fab, gentle, affectionate and makes me smile every day.
My favourite thing is to watch him run, but he's also quite cute tucked under our Christmas tree

BusterTheBulldog · 12/12/2016 09:26

Loving all these pics!! Xmas Smile

What a handsome fellow Smile

You probably know this already but clean up your kitchen and put all the food away. You might think he can't reach something at the back of the bench. He can. They're not All food theirs and counter surfers but many are. I also had issues with my foster hound stealing toilet paper and toothpaste from the bathroom. Not sure if this was just him though.

Enjoy and have a very pointy Christmas Xmas Smile

PetraStrorm · 12/12/2016 12:56

Yep, keep your surfaces clear! Very soon after I got my greyhound I left a leather specs case within reach and she snuck off with it and ate the entire thing apart from the metal clasp. Which meant an emergency dash to the on-call vet in the nearest city (because of course it was 11pm on the Sunday of a bank holiday weekend). It was all fine in the end and I think she learned her lesson, but it's best to be extra careful until you know them and they've learned the house rules.

The same dog never counter surfs any more - DS went out once and left an entire block of unwrapped cheddar on the worktop and the dog didn't touch it.

I'll never get a different breed now I've had one, they are lovely lovely creatures.

CMOTDibbler · 12/12/2016 12:59

I have a stairgate on the kitchen as the cats have their food in there, and though the dogs could jump it if they so wished, they never do. However ddog2 can hear if you have latched it from anywhere in the house and immediatly appears! My little girl puppy visitors love a cup of tea and you can't leave it unattended for a minute Smile

How wonderful! We adopted a greyhound a month ago, our first ever dog. It was a massive learning curve and not without its hiccups but he is the loveliest loveliest thing. Good luck! X

ChocolateIsNotSleep · 12/12/2016 22:32

If you can, once they're settled in and you're comfort able with them off lead - take them to the beach. Preferably a big, flat, empty one with the tide out. I'll never forget our greyhounds first time seeing the sand! He was like a giant puppy playing with it and bouncing all over the place! And oh, to watch him run!

Boynamedsue · 22/12/2016 23:41

We'll he's been here almost a week now and I can't believe how quickly he's settled. He's so calm, loves cuddles and is lovely to walk. His farts however could empty a room but no-one is perfect!

My dogs have to have wheat/gluten free food, and smell a lot better on it too! We use Vitalin sensitive or Burns pork and potato as dry food with a bit of Webbox chubb roll (smells and looks vile to me, but its got no cereal and the dogs adore it) because ddog1 is a a fussy beggar.
Mine don't do very well with turkey either - smell wise, rather than poo

One of my foster puppies is going to her forever sofa today (special dispensation as its just the two of them and no visitors/outing over christmas) and the other is having a visit from a potential adopter. I will be sad to see them go as they really are a delight, but I'm sure there will be others soon.

This is my boy in a festive hat.

He is lovely but has never managed to learn how to do stairs. He did get up once but then stood at the top crying because he didn't know how to get back down.
