Vets are still recommending bitches have one litter for better health and temperment

Absolutely shocking that vets are still saying this!

A friend has posted on the selling sites asking for a stud for her bitch because the vet has reccomended she has a litter because it's better for her health and gives them a better temperment

I've put her straight and told her don't do it

She doesn't want puppies in the first place so I think she's glad that I've said it

But come on!

I thought it was now recommended that they have a first season in order to reduce the risks of mammary cancers.
However, what you are saying the vet was recommending sounds a tad old fashioned.

Floralnomad · 09/12/2016 19:44

I think this is a bit of a generalisation , it's a particular vet , not all vets .

Soubriquet · 09/12/2016 19:46

Some vets do but yes sorry for the generalisation

And yes one season is good for small breeds and at least 2 years old for large breeds

Some people also use the line that " the vet said so" because they want to sell some puppies Hmm

Veterinari · 09/12/2016 20:31

I can't imagine any sensible vet has said this. I suspect your friend has heard what she wants to hear

MooPointCowsOpinion · 09/12/2016 20:32

Is it bad for them? Is it just not good or bad either way health wise, but bad because of all the extra puppies in the world then needing loving homes?

Soubriquet · 09/12/2016 20:32

No. She really doesn't want puppies

The vet refused to spay her until she had puppies

So she's moving vet

It can be bad for them

Forget all the dogs in rescue and just think about breeding in general

You need to do a complete health check on both bitch and dog before pregnancy

The dog has to smaller than bitch which can be difficult in small breeds

Mum needs extra food and other care during pregnancy

She could require an emergency c-section if something goes wrong. Big bill

Puppies might need hand rearing if mum rejects them

Then it's £££ paying for flea and worming treatments and microchipping

Good for weaning puppies and destruction of the house as pups as they find their legs

Soubriquet Thank you, recently my parents have been offered a dog if they promise to breed her once for the breeder as she's apparently very special; colouring/lineage or something.

My initial thought was 'Christ no don't do that who wants the hassle of 8 weeks of puppies!' Without even considering the rest of it.

boybabies · 10/12/2016 12:55

Having babies didn't improve my health or temperament!!

arbrighton · 10/12/2016 14:13

No way was I ever going to breed from mine- she had one season and then was spayed. Vet just said has to have had a season before they would spay

Branleuse · 10/12/2016 14:19

ive never heard a vet recommend this. I always assume when people say this, they just want to sell some puppies or think it will be cute

Wolfiefan · 10/12/2016 14:20

Boybabies or mine!!

Veterinari · 10/12/2016 15:24

Soubriwuet she should also report the vet to the RCVS

Soubriquet · 10/12/2016 15:30

I'll reccomended she does that. Thank you veterinari
