My dog has bitten another dog

He is a 9 year old terrier, loves people but has always been wary of other dogs. As he has gotten older he has mellowed a lot and now goes to the dog park twice a day without incident - I would describe him as tolerant of other dogs rather than enjoying their company e.g. will sniff bums and move on but has never ever played with them, even as a young pup.

Anyway today a springer spaniel came up to him while we were in the park with my toddler DD, they sniffed noses (always a bad sign it seems?!) Then my dog just went for this dog. The other dog pinned him to the ground and he squealed and then it's owner called it off. We parted ways quite happily, the other lady was fine and I apologised profusely because my dog definitely started it. We said no harm done and on we went. On the way home I noticed that he had blood all down one side of his face. I felt bad I hadn't noticed before but he looked fine at the time and my attention had been on DD. Took him straight home and gave him a bath but can't find a source of the blood at all, not a single cut. It must be blood from the other dog and I feel mortified. I assume this lady will realise when she gets home her dog was hurt but I have no idea who she is. What would you do? Should I attempt to find out who she is e.g. call council (we have to register dogs to local council here in Australia). Would you be concerned about this attack? Should I see a vet? Feel very worried and upset Sad

I'm not sure there's a whole lot you can do to find the other dog. Even if you do go to the council there could be 100 dogs registered in your area and calling every vet would take all day. It could also put you in a tricky position if the ranger deems your dog dangerous? Obviously if you see her at the park again you could speak with her, but I would focus more on your dog's behaviour for future walks, keeping on lead or away from other dogs if you sense it won't end well.

Just coz ur dog went for him first doesn't mean he started it but I guess your dog should have left it. Maybe as it didn't end well (getting pinned down) he'll think twice to do it again.

I wouldn't worry about it , it's possible that blood was from your dog , a nicked ear bleeds heaps but once it's stopped is often an invisible wound .

I wouldn't worry too much. If you didn't see the injury at the time it is unlikely to be serious and it sounds as though your dog got well and truly put in his place. If you see her again you could ask if he is ok.
