Brown patches on the floor in the morning?

We got DDog in August from a rescue, he's a lab (possibly lab x). Over the last week we've come downstairs (where he sleeps) and have found brownish patches of what was obviously liquid on the carpet. It doesn't smell, so it isn't poo or wee, so we've concluded that it's vomit - but it's totally liquid, nothing solid in it at all. Cleans up quite easily too (although we have an inexpensive carpet which does seem to repel stains).

When we got him he lost a lot of weight so we put him onto Millie's, on advice from our behaviouralist. He's put on a couple of kg so we changed variety two or three weeks ago, so still Millies but a 'maintaining weight' rather than a 'putting weight on.'

Any thoughts? It only happens at night which makes me think it's not the food, but then if it is sick, what else could it be?

Sounds like it could be hunger pukes, where they just bring up a bit of bile.

A couple of mine are prone to it and a few small biscuits just before bed usually tides them over until morning.

OK, that makes sense. We have started slowly reducing his food as he's now on his target weight so he could be hungry. Of course, he's a lab so he's always hungry...

I think it's more likely to be his anal glands - he could need help emptying them, particularly as his diet has changed. A quick visit to the vet will sort it out, or you could learn to do it yourself (have a look online) but it's not easy until you know what you're doing.

Does he 'scoot' his backside on the floor at all? Could be it only bothers him at night, but mine had this problem when we rescued her and she didn't 'scoot' but did pay a LOT of attention to her back end. I had her checked when at the vet for her 2nd jab and one side was impacted. All good now and no brown patches (I didn't notice a smell either, but I did when the vet emptied them!).

He doesn't scoot or pay much attention to the back end, really. I'll get him booked in at the vet. Thanks both.

Is it only ever at night or when he is lying down too?

Does he ever do it at other times?

I agree with Trionic. We had this with our Dlab - a small supper cured him completely (and made him happy!)

Well we're up a bit later than usual, and he's just thrown up. There was solid matter in there... But he ate it. Which is nice. Still think a wee bit supper, or is he reacting to his food? It never happens at any other time and has just started happening this week as I've reduced his food a little. And as I said up top, he's on the same brand of food but a different variety.

I would get a vet check, a friend has one with a mild megaesophagus and it only shows itself by vomiting when she lies down and weight loss- other than that you would think she's normal Smile

It could be anything but it's worth a look!

If it were anal glands, it would smell vile.

Bile, from hunger sounds right. What times do you feed him? I would try either moving his dinner a bit later, or a few biscuits (or veg if he likes them and you're trying to get his weight down) so he's got a bit more in his stomach.

Ooh fun morning at the vets! Came downstairs to find him trying to swallow a disgusting pile of cloth. Tried to grab it and realised it was the cuddle toy he'd arrived with, or the remnants of it at least. Then worked out that was what as causing the brown patches. Basically, he'd eaten it, then it had irritated him so he'd thrown it up, then he'd eaten it again - and I think that's been going on all week.

Vet gave him an injection to make him sick. Disgusting ball of bile and cloth now removed and ddog feeling very sorry for himself. The little minger.
