When do puppies start sleeping through regularly?

AwesomeDog is 17 weeks and last night had us up at 2:40am and then twice more before morning. We didn't leave her as DS1 has exams this week and needs his sleep. She mostly wakes 5-6am with the odd lovely morning where she sleeps until nearly 6:30am. It appears to have no bearing whether she has one walk, two walks, no walks, short, long etc as to what she does.

She likes to sleep from 8-9pm and would go to bed then if we let her. She's not keen on last wee before bed as it's cold and dark Grin.

She's 17 weeks and a golden retriever.

The neighbour's can't hear her. I've told dh she knows if she barks long enough he'll go to her. He's too soft. But how long is too long given at 4-5am she doesn't need the loo?

Its not a problem for him then he can get on with it but i'd be pleading the case of him being directly responsible for keeping whole house awake!!! Good job neighbours cant hear (for now small bark...) is one less pressure.

So everyone can moan at DDad as the culprit of noisy nights!
Who told him this was the way to go and why is he not noticing its NOT WORKING!

'too long'? The longer this reaction by DH goes on the longer and more insistent barking will become

He was just too soft with her and when she's so young and our first dog we didn't want to get it wrong, especially as up until a few days ago she was going to the toilet when he let her out.

Ours cried for the first three nights and then slept through the whole night. He goes to bed in his crate at 9.45/10ish and I get him up at 6.30 on weekdays when I get up and 7.30/8am at weekends. I think the key is just to let him bark ... like controlled crying but for pups.

We did try controlled barking. Dh cracked after 18 minutes. We also had a week and a half where DC had GCSEs so we didn't want him to be lose sleep.

He was definitely right to be letting her out for toiletting! They cant be expected to hold on so long its harmful to them so little. So either let out or put down paper in separate area to sleeping for night wees and poos. These will all stop in due course but they should not need to wake you for unless you prefer that way.

Because she sleeps in the crate which is inside the guinea pigs indoor play pen she can't get to the kitchen for a wee but apart from the fact she's house trained completely she has never weed in her crate and we've always got up for her. When she got up at 6 she didn't ask to go out for a wee until half past so she can do all night. She hasn't wanted to go out for a week 3-5am for a few days now even when waking.

She woke at 3:13 and we didn't go to her. She barked on and off for 13 minutes then slept until six. She wasn't frantic or as loud so I think it's more company she wants.

This morning she woke at 5:19, a little bark, low rumbling then back to sleep until 5:59. Good girl.
