Does anyone give their dog glucosamine supplements?

DH bought some expensive human glucosamine supplements and never took them. they are now past their use-by date, but i don't want to waste them and thought they may be of benefit for the dog, who has arthritis.

Anyone know if this is OK, and what sort of dose would you give the dog? The capsules are 400 mg each, human recommended dose is 3 a day so I thought 1 or 2 for the dog (pointer).

If they're past their use by date what would be the point of giving them to the dog as surely if they're not going to work for humans they won't work for the dog?

Also you have no way on knowing if being past their use by date means some of the ingredients have gone off.

I wouldn't, but if you want to use them why not ask your vet if it's a good idea.

Vet will try and sell me their own (which they have done before).

I wouldn't give my dog out of date medication but glucosamine is glucosamine so would be OK for the dog but it depends what other ingredients are in the pills as that may not be ok for the dog . You need to check every ingredient carefully . FWIW , my dog has a supplement called Canine Joint Right which seems to have helped him .

Dogs need glucosamine hydrochloride, humans need glycosamine sulphate different bioavailability.

The tablets I've got are Glucosamine HCl which is hydrochloride.

They also contain Chondroitin.

The dosage is about 500mg per day per 10kg, a little less for chondroitin - although as far as I know you won't do any harm going a bit over. If they're out of date then they probably won't be as effective.

Also I recommend a brand called Canine Joint Right by www.horsesupplementsdirect.co.uk - I've been using it for years on my dogs and I couldn't believe the difference when I first started on it. I remember doing a lot of research at the time and it was definitely the best one I found then.

I buy synoquin for my dog, it's brilliant.

Our old rescue has a doggy supplement which includes glucosamine and MSM (I take MSM for my arthritis as it happens). She does seem better on it. I'd have no problem with the out of date as aspect, so far as I'm aware it just means it may be slightly less effective.

Last study I read said glucosamine was useless.
