Any Australian Terrier Owners?

Hi
We are thinking of getting AT as a family pet. One of our biggest worries for us is that they are not meant to be off the leash as they will chase and are they suitable as family pets.

Are there any AT owners out their who can advice.

Thank you in advance

I think you'll struggle to find an owner of one TBH, they're not a common breed, looking at the KC website there were only 27 puppies registered last year - so about 5 litters.

I meant I think you'll struggle to find an owner on here, with them not being common Smile sorry, that wasn't awfully clear, lol

Sorry I've no clue about the Australian terrier in particular but most terriers will chase things but that doesn't exclude them from being off lead ,you just need to train a good recall /leave and let them off only in suitable areas . I have a patterdale X and he goes off lead on the beach and at our local Heath but I don't let him off near livestock or in woods . Can I ask why you want this breed in particular ?

I don't know if you are still thinking about australian terriers. We have 2 and they are wonderful pets. If they are trained on recall, they are fine off lead: they do turn their brains off if they see a squirrel but once its gone up the tree they can be called back. Like all terriers, they have attitude, but are fabulous characters. They don't need huge walks, but if you go on one, they are ready to go. Lovely little dogs.

oh god we had an Australian Silky Terrier when I was growing up. Nightmare - bit all the time, barked BUT I lived in a very dysfunctional family and it was not properly trained, walked and was left alone for way too long. So I'm not sure my experience is all that helpful for you except to state what Im sure you already know that they are relatively high maintenance dogs (but its low maintenance needs weren't even met in my family's case so probably not as high maintenance as I imagine). They are typically pretty feisty I think!
