Anyone have experience with labradoodles? I have 2 DCs under 8, and will be a first time dog owner.

Holidayplanner, my golden doodle is 6 weeks old, just over 2 weeks before we finally get him - seems like ages since we saw him, he's changed alot since then - I get weekly pictures and updates from the breeder. Parents been hip scored and tested, so fingers crossed that he remains healthy :-)

Highly recommend labradoodle; calm, friendly, loyal, gentle, intelligent and I could on. Not hard work at all. Though other posters quite right, at 25kg, on the expensive side and she needs clipping every six weeks. I book our hair appointments together- groomer next door to hairdresser.

I'm trying to attach an image of my pooch to be, if it works, you will see how gorgeous he is

Although he hasn't yet, I'm totally sure I've formed an attachment, just hoping it all goes to plan, it's like expecting a child in a way, so excited. Worked out where to train him (hmm.. Xmas, ah well, I'll roll with whatever for a boy this lush )

Pluto30 · 26/10/2016 22:14

He's gorgeous, Open. Smile

Get a poodle. I can't see how adding the Labrador bit improves a poodle. They are also prone to skeletal issues because the lighter poodle bone structure can't cope with the muscular weight of the Labrador.

You can get mid sized poodles called moyens and also smaller sized standards. I've included a picture of my 5 year old rescue standard. She is amazingly awesome
with my kids despite having left alone for most of her early life.

Btw we groom her ourselves. £150 on the Wahl Bravuras Lithiums and its takes about an hour every six weeks.

Opentooffers · 26/10/2016 22:40

Retrievers a little less stocky than labs, will be about the size of a springer spaniel when full grown - which would still be just smaller than a standard poodle (height-wise). It happens to be that poodles who have the designer haircuts with pom-pom feet and shaved faces, are exactly what puts some people off poodles. However, since seeing more natural-haired poodles, minus the designer topiary (yes they remind someone like me of box hedges), they are quite appealing.

lostscot · 26/10/2016 22:53

We have a 5 yr old golden doodle and he's our perfect dog! Loves everyone from the postman to babies, calm and sleepy at home or will run all day if we are out. Yes he needs his coat looking after and he's big but I prefer big dogs.
If you happen to be in Norfolk I know a couple of brilliant ladies who occasionally breed.

"Retrievers a little less stocky than labs, will be about the size of a springer spaniel"

Golden retrievers? Not some rarer kind?

Because they're the same height and weight as labs...well supposed to be, they're often bigger though.

sadnortherner · 26/10/2016 23:03

My parents have three of them (oldest is nearly 10) now

Beautiful dogs, very friends, great with kids and very easy to train.

One of them eats her own mess though and then wants to lick everyone Shock but I don't think that's anything to do with her being a labradoodle!

Pluto30 · 26/10/2016 23:09

sadnortherner My beagle does that. Strange creature! Grin

Opentooffers · 26/10/2016 23:21

Ah well, maybe that's an observation of the number of overweight labs one sees around. Retrievers certainly appear leaner, though taller, however, size of poodle crossed is a factor too, whether toy, miniature or standard.
Talking of rarer kind, I love the look of a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever - ginger, and smaller - but rare as hens teeth this side of the pond.

Opentooffers · 26/10/2016 23:30

Incidentally, my doodle's dad, a natural-looking fox red miniature poodle - totally gorgeous, really liked him, so yes, nowt wrong with some poodles - not their fault that they get daft haircuts foisted on then - IMHO, I add, horses for courses, just not my thing.

Oh my god open! Gorgeous! Photos attached of my small Australian labradoodle as a pup and now fully grown. Best dog ever.

Wellhello Still cute and gorgeous when they grow up, lovely pics :-)

Blackbird82 · 27/10/2016 13:39

I used to do home boarding and I looked after two Labradoodles of the same age. One was a truly lovely boy, obedient, not overly energetic, good in the house, calm with other dogs etc. The other was completely different, very high energy, hyper, destructive, found it very difficult to calm down even after a 2 hour walk. So, as with any breed you just don't know what you're going to end up with but seeing both the parents of the litter is vital as it will tell you a lot!

EarlGreyTeaAndToast · 27/10/2016 14:33

I knew what I would be ending up with. I bought a multi generation mini Australian labradoodle from a breeder I'd known for 10 + years. I have the exact coat I wanted, and the exact temperament and size (and bone structure - very light) I was expecting.

People don't know what they are talking about mostly with labradoodles on here. I guess they mean first gen Lab versus poodle with no thought process behind it. You don't have to go down that route! There are a few reputable and brilliant labradoodle breeders who will guarantee exacts.

I love mine - VERY low maintence and perfect with kids and other pets.

tabulahrasa · 27/10/2016 14:52

" I guess they mean first gen Lab versus poodle"

Well yes, because Australian labradoodles are something entirely different...and potentially more controversial if the claims about their origins even have some truth in them.

Even if you leave aside the possibly dodgy origins of them - they're not strictly speaking labradoodles either, they're not just multi generational crosses, they're multi breed crosses, there's at least 6 recognised breeds in their ancestry.

No1HolidayPlanner · 30/10/2016 22:33

Opentooffers- your puppy looks so gorgeous.. We are seeing ours in 2 weeks then collecting early December.. Father is also a red minature poodle.. Let me know how you get onSmile. Have funSmile

Booboostwo · 31/10/2016 05:41

Had a look at the Australian Labradoodle site, a type of dog which is a mix of labradors,, poodles, irish water spaniels, English and American cocker spaniels...but then the description concludes with the triumphant goal of the association of "promoting uniform breed standards to ensure the health and integrity of the breed". You really can't make this silliness up!
