Well that's just ridiculous. Any dog can be messed up by being rehomed and rescued. You can't attribute that poor start in life to any specific breed.

Mmm I suppose.

I have had a bad experience with a jack cross chihuahua biting my sons.. I couldn't put it down to either breed if I'm honest and it was a possession issue.

Rescue dogs are fab. I've had one and he was an arse but he was well loved

With children, I would hesitate with a rescue dog and I'm usually the first to suggest them

Their past experiences can be unknown and it will shape their behaviour as an adult

Puppies are hard work, but you at least get a chance to mould them to how you want

So many posters come here looking for advice on buying a puppy, and much good advice is given. The message on puppy farming is still not getting through.
Would it carry more weight if there were notes on puppy buying at the top of the topic.... MNHQ?

30 years ago you could get a non-KC pure breed for £100 and a cross for less.
Nobody was deliberately breeding crosses then, certainly not on the current scale, and they were usually the result of accidental markings.
Suddenly someone rebranded them as "designer" breeds, started pushing "hybrid vitality" and myths of being "hypoallergenic" (despite the fact that existing breeds are low-allergy) and give them a cute "oodle" name, suddenly the price shoots up.
Now you have puppy farms cashing in on the trend by perpetually pushing out crosses from untested parents with no regard to dog welfare. If you seek a deliberate cross then IMO you are part of that problem.
I have no problem with crosses, just the silly prices from "breeders". If you want a cross adopt.

I've not actively looked for any cross/breed though my last dog was a cross. So everybody looking for a staffie is helping to create the overbreeding of them and the amount ending up in shelters? Looking for a specific type of breed is not adding to a problem when the problem is already there. Breeding should be more monitored. And as for getting a rescue dog as explained earlier I'm not able to as they don't rehome to you if you have a child under 5.

Even though they are small. Chihuahuas are a high energy breed and need lots of exercise. they are not calm breeds but I'm sure there are many people who will say theirs are.
I like cross breeds as it is starting to get rid of some of the nastier inbread features. I also like that they cost a lot as that means people hopefully don't buy in a whim.
Have fun with your new pup when you get it. 🐶

WyldFyre · 10/10/2016 07:32

But it's not a breed OP.

And I didn't say that. Some purebred breeders do add to the problem, however the explosion in puppy mills has gone hand in had with the trend for "designer dogs".

Tbh, I don't know what the answers are to over breeding and huge amounts of dogs is rescues. People really need to think more about what having a puppy/dogs means and how much commitment it is. But the message doesn't seem to be getting through.

I know the answer to puppy farming is to not buy from puppy farms. But they are excellent at hiding they are a puppy farm and the message isn't getting through to a lot of people.

I am not against cross breed dogs. I am against anyone badly breeding dogs, crosses or pedigree. I am against people pretending that cross breeding dogs is always a good thing, always produces the required results (which is why the crosses are so expensive) and fed up of any tom, dick or Harry just breeding their pet dog (with any dog) to make a bit of cash without dog health checks on the parents and puppies.

Dog breeding needs heavily regulating. I think that's the only solution.
