How would your dog deal with an intruder?

Mine would try to play fetch with them...

Same as alcochocs full defence mode. Only it wasn't a burglar it was a policeman trying to get in (wrong address).

SpringBail · 27/08/2016 09:32

SpringDog would run to see who was coming in the door then run away scared.

Slothlikesundays · 27/08/2016 09:45

Mine howls and barks whenever anyone "strange" comes along. Including me and dp if he's forgotten we're upstairs. Not the takeaway guy though. Never a peep for him!

Airfixkitwidow · 27/08/2016 09:59

Poodle dog would bark frantically. We would yell at her to shut up and ignore her as usual. Leonberger dog would leap at them in order to lick their ears which is a weird obsession of hers. I think her sheer size would scare any intruder off. Along with having a giant doggy tongue thoroughly licking their face.

GinIsIn · 27/08/2016 10:06

I have always had big, working breeds before. They would all, without exception, have shown the burglar where we kept the telly, and possibly offered them a cup of tea.

Our current dog, however, a 12 inch high ball of fluff Maltese cross, would definitely try and kill them. She's the soppiest, daftest, friendliest thing normally but when riled she's very defensive. In the words of Shakespeare, "though she be but little, she is fierce!" Grin. (Photo sadly not my dog, but not far off!)

Both would bark incessantly at the first sound of movement. The 3yo would stand at the top of the stairs and bark frantically (very anxious of strangers) and the 2yo would run straight to them to give them cuddles and kisses.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 27/08/2016 10:18

two gsds here, both very barky when people arrive...they love to bark and sing and greet people.

the DPD guy came with their food the other day, all the doors were open and the first I knew of it was one of them barking furiously, that was bravedog, ninny dog was as usual by my feet.

I left ninny dog in the sitting room and found brave dog peeking around the kitchen door, barking his head off, while delivery guy was standing with his parcel inside the back door!
Brave dog came behind me once i was chatting to the guy and did a really big bark to prove his braveness. wile still managing to remain behind me and the box.

He seemed very pleased with himself though because he had spotted the intruder.

Just made me laugh that he was waiting for me to arrive as reinforcements before actually confronting the "intruder"

paddypants13 · 27/08/2016 10:23

My dogs are no longer with us but-

Paddydog1 would have gone for them. He was one of the gentlest dogs I have ever met but if he felt he was threatened or I was threatened he had no issues in defending himself or us.

Paddydog2 would have blocked the door and head butted them repeatedly for attention and biscuits. This would be no joke as she used her head like a battering ram. One of her nicknames was "the tank". She would have probably held the burglar captive using this method until we woke and called for the police. At that point the burglar would have been begging for mercy.

Paddydog3 would have acted the same as paddydog1. Both were GS crossed and had that protective instinct.

I miss my babies.

FiveHoursSleep · 27/08/2016 10:36

I would have bet good money that ours would have wagged their tails and gone back to sleep, but we gave permission for someone to enter the garden to do some work and forgot the dogs were out. They cornered him and he had to call for help!
I apologised lots but was secretly impressed.

BrianCoxReborn · 27/08/2016 10:41

[Dog] Oh hello! Hi!!!!! OH MY GID YOU'RE HERE TO SEE ME !!!!!??? Have this sock, no honestly have the sock, take the sock, please take it, it's fresh from the dirty laundry extra stinky and I got it just for youuuuu!!!! TAKE THE SOCK, TAKE IT, TAAAKE THE SOCK!!!

Ok, ok. Rub my belly? G'waaaaan, rub my belly!! Look, look, I'm lying at your feet, belly in the air, sock in mouth. RUB MY BELLY!!!!

Hmm

Half lab half mut. 100% dim (but lovely and affectionate and with a nasty sock habit...)

ChairRider4 · 27/08/2016 11:04

I know my boy would bark growl and force them against a wall and hold them there

He is soft as anything but when someone drunkenly tried to climb over my 6 foot fence thinking short cut he let his thoughts and existence be known

JustBeingJuliet · 27/08/2016 11:45

Ddog will bark like a demon if anyone dares to knock on or try the door, however on the one occasion a friend of mine (complete stranger to the dog) let herself in to walk her for me, ddog hid and my friend couldn't find her!

Themoleisdead · 27/08/2016 11:53

DDog1 (greyhound) would raise his head apathetically from the bed before going back to sleep.

DDog2 would bark fiercely whilst the intruder was safely behind a door but retreat to behind my legs if they entered.

plominoagain · 27/08/2016 12:55

My new boy is surprisingly territorial for a greyhound - proper aggressive barking when someone he doesn't know comes up the drive , then looks to me or DH , and seems to take his cue from our demeanour . So usually turns into a waggy bouncy hound . But we had an man from the electric company crossing one of our field to check the pylon without telling us , until we heard a shriek and found the guy climbing up the pylon with new boy running round the bottom trying to grab his ankles .

LittleCandle · 27/08/2016 13:06

Candledog would grovel on his way to meet the intruder, then collapse pathetically on the floor to get his tummy rubbed, while assuring whoever came in that he is ultra-neglected in the way of tummy rubs. He only barks if someone comes in when one of us is with him. Or sometimes he makes a pathetic whimpering sound if he's not allowed to answer the door.

insan1tyscartching · 27/08/2016 13:10

If we were in Eric would play merry hell and would probably bite their ankles. If we were out he'd be delighted to see them and roll over for a tummy rub. He is very protective of us not so much of his space.

WeAllHaveWings · 27/08/2016 14:02

Our Labrador would only go to investigate if they went near the fridge

Wonderfulworcestershirelady · 27/08/2016 17:53

We are on our third lab who is a pain in the backside at the moment. She's only 8 months so would probably try to give them her bed which she does every time we go in the kitchen.
Our first two were annoyingly selective with regard to barking. They would stand at the door wagging if they knew the visitor on the other side. But would become the guard dog from hell if a stranger knocked on the door.
Despite their reputation as soppy laid back dogs they can be be very protective of their family.

honeyroar · 27/08/2016 19:46

We live in a very rural place and they go mental if people walk past or come to the door. Once someone comes in they wag and go giddy and over friendly. They were hysterical recently when a window cleaner came for the first time and just did our upstairs windows. When he came down the ladder and touched the ground they went crazy barking, but the second they set foot on his ladder they immediately shut up.

It frightens me what would happen if someone did come in. My little Romanian dog was badly handled by her capturers in Romania and is terrified of men, so she'd probably run away in a panic. My big female lab would try and be friendly and would hopefully run or hide if she was scared. But my male lab might try and scare them, and it worries me that he would get hurt.

Poor little newly neutered dog hiding down the side of the washing machine. That made me sad. Hope he was ok.

rubbishbin · 27/08/2016 20:42

Awwww! I feel bad for the dogs that hid! Sad

JontyDoggle37 · 27/08/2016 20:54

Our Westie would remove limbs. He's a big Westie, 11kgs of muscle and very territorial. We always introduce new people into the house very carefully - once he knows people he is gentle and super friendly but anyone trying to force their way in would be suffering immediate blood loss.

Raahh · 27/08/2016 22:50

Bark. A lot. And then bark some more.

He's a mini schnauzer, and doesn't even like people who have visited us a dozen time before .Not without barking. A lot.

(I'm convinced if we were properly burgled, he'd ignore everythingAngryGrin )

takesnoprisoners · 28/08/2016 08:16

Mine will probably wake up the entire neighbourhood. Like he does everytime the postman opens the gate.

Smoothyloopy · 28/08/2016 08:26

Open one eye, shut eye, go back to sleep.

daisywhoopsie · 28/08/2016 08:28

The two boys would absolutely love it and be very welcoming.

Unfortunately for them this will never happen as since I had DS our girl won't let anybody she doesn't know in the gate. The postman has taken to shouting my name from said gate and waiting for me to come to him to avoid her.
